Stalled Chateau project in South Lake Tahoe gets new legs with building permit

After years of limbo and uncertainty, the Chateau project at the corner of Highway 50 and Stateline in South Lake Tahoe will once again see the light of day.

The city of South Lake Tahoe issued a building permit Friday for the $400 million project, referred to as "the hole" by many locals, which has been stalled since 2008 after financing dried up.

“Thank you to City Council and staff for working extensive hours on getting this project started again and reinvigorating the local economy,” said South Lake Tahoe Mayor Tom Davis.

Here is the Carson City road construction and maintenance report for the week of Aug. 19-25. The long line striping project will continue at various locations throughout the city during the night hours of 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Minor delays are possible in the areas of striping activity.

Here is the Carson City road construction and maintenance report for the week of Aug. 12-18. Tuesday, August 13, the outside eastbound lane on Fairview Drive will be closed between Roop Street and Industrial Park Drive during the early morning hours. The lane is expected to reopen by 7 a.m.

From Thursday, August 15, and Friday, August 16, the inside lanes in both directions on William Street will be closed from just east of Rand Avenue to just west of the interchange with the Carson City Freeway.

Carson City celebrates National Night Out with new community initiatives

Carson City neighbors by the thousands gathered Tuesday evening at Mills Park for the 11th annual National Night Out.

The themes for the evening were community and neighborhood partnership and outreach. Judging by attendance, it was one of the largest gatherings thus far for the annual summer event, hosted by the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

"The turnout is one of the biggest I've seen," said DARE officer Lisa Davis, a coordinator of the event. "It says a lot about our citizens who have come together for a cause we all want: A safe and healthy community."

Neighborhood outreach is theme of Carson City Sheriff's National Night Out

With neighborhood outreach as the theme, Carson City Sheriff's Office organizers say the National Night Out event at Mills Park on Tuesday will also highlight a number of new community wide initiatives.

The event runs from 5 to 8 p.m. and brings thousands of Carson City residents to the park annually in a open house environment, providing partnerships between law enforcement and the community. In Carson City, this event represents the culmination of efforts made to address crime, drugs, and violence and is the largest event of its kind in the area.

Here is the Carson City road construction and maintenance report for the week of Aug. 5-11: Slurry seal activity will continue on Monday, August 5, and Tuesday, August 6, on streets east of Edmonds Drive in the area bounded by Fairview Drive to the north and Koontz Lane to the south.

There will also be slurry sealing on Waterford Place and Derby Court on Tuesday, August 6. There will be temporary road closures while the work is being done. Delays are expected.

Here is the Carson City road construction and maintenance report for the week of July 29 through August 4. There will be work on the south shoulder of U.S. Highway 50 between Airport Road and Fairview Drive. No delays are expected.

Slurry seal activity will continue in the area bounded approximately by King Street to the north, Terrace Street to the south, Carson Street to the east, and Longview Way to the west. There will be temporary road closures in this area while the work is being done. Delays are expected.

Here is the Carson City road construction and maintenance report for the week of July 22-28: Lane closures will continue on Fairview Drive between Carson Street to just east of Edmonds Drive from 8 p.m. Sunday, July 21, through 6 a.m. on Monday, July 22. Detours will be signed.

On Wednesday, July 24, S. Lompa Lane will be closed between Fairview Drive and Edmonds Drive for maintenance. Detours will be signed, but business access will be maintained.

Beginning Sunday, July 14, through Friday, July 19, there will be road closures on Fairview Drive during the night hours of 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. due to maintenance. The closures will occur at locations throughout the project limits from Carson Street to just east of Edmonds Drive and detours will be signed.

Here is the Carson City road construction and maintenance report for Monday, July 8 through July 14.

Beginning Monday, July 8, there will be nightly lane closures on South Carson Street between Koontz Lane and US Highway 50 W (Spooner Junction) between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Once the work on Carson Street is complete, Frontage Road will be permanently closed from Arthur Street to just south of Snyder Avenue. However, access will be maintained for businesses and residences. This will likely occur mid to late-week.

Bison Fire in Douglas County grows, shifts north with the wind

UPDATE 5PM: Bison Fire grows to 2,000 acres, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center. At least 350 firefighters are battling the blaze burning in southeast Douglas County.

Here is the Carson City road construction and maintenance report for the week of July 1-7: Beginning Monday, Lompa Lane will be closed between Highway 50 East and Menlo Drive due to construction.

Detours will be signed. In addition, the JAC bus routes 2A and 2B will be re-routed to follow the detour route and the bus stops on Lompa Lane and Menlo Drive will be temporarily closed during the road closure.

After 24 years as the smiling face that greets clients and visitors to Lumos & Associates' Carson City office, Diane Osborne is leaving the firm.

"All our Carson Office clients know Di, and she remembers almost all of their names, whether they come up to her desk or call on the phone." Said Lumos Carson Office Principal, Mike Bennett. "She made me feel welcome here when I first started with the firm 17 years ago."

Portion of Carson City Freeway to close Monday night for maintenance

A portion of the Carson City Freeway will be closed Monday beginning at 8 p.m. and running through 6 a.m. Tuesday morning, city officials said.

The Carson City Freeway will be closed from the U.S. Highway 50 East/William Street interchange to the Fairview Drive interchange because of maintenance.

Detours will be signed routing southbound freeway traffic west on William Street and south on to Carson Street. If necessary, the freeway will be closed Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, during the same hours, until the project is complete.

Lake Tahoe summer shuttle service to Sand Harbor begins June 15

The East Shore Express, a park and ride bus that runs from Incline Village to Sand Harbor, opens for a second season for Lake Tahoe visitors and locals.

Buses will operate Saturdays and Sundays beginning the weekends of June 15-16 and June 22-23 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Daily operations begin Saturday, June 29 through Sept. 2 with service from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and run every 20 minutes on weekends. Hours of operation on the Fourth of July are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

CARSON CITY — Several bills that were introduced in the just-ended session of the Nevada Legislature didn’t get a chance to see the light of day in 2013. Here’s a look back on a few pieces of legislation that died this year:

Ward-only voting Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval vetoed legislation Tuesday that would have changed Reno’s and Sparks’ current voting system from citywide voting to ward-only voting, which would require voters to select the city council candidate who would represent the ward they live in.

Amodei amendment would shift funds to VA Regional Offices with largest backlogs

Nevada Congressman Mark Amodei offered a successful amendment on Tuesday to the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs Appropriations bill for next year, which would shift $44 million for mandatory overtime to the VA Regional Offices with the worst disability claims backlogs — greater than 365 days.

Of the 15 VAROs on the list, Reno’s backlog, with an average claims process of 504 days, is the second worst in the nation behind Los Angeles (576 days). The amendment passed the House by a bipartisan vote of 248 to 172.

Military Aircraft and Vehicle Museum to Open in Carson City

Cactus Air Force received approval from the Carson City Airport Authority to build a military aircraft and vehicle museum at the Carson City Airport.

Cactus Air Force’s “Wings and Wheels Museum” will be a nonprofit, public museum dedicated to celebrating aviation and military history through preserving, restoring, displaying and use of US military aircraft and vehicles from WWII to present.

A museum to display military aircraft and vehicles is planned at the Carson City Airport, with a preview slated for summer and construction to start in the fall.

Western Nevada College to graduate its largest class Monday

CARSON CITY — For the fourth consecutive year, Western Nevada College will graduate its largest class in history. The class of 2013 is 505 students strong, with 530 degrees and certificates being issued.

Four students will receive Bachelor of Technology degrees in construction management, and three students will graduate with bachelor’s degrees as part of WNC’s teacher preparation partnership with Nevada State College. The graduates span 60 years, from the youngest at age 17 and the eldest at 77.
