CARSON CITY — More than 115 Carson High School Career and Technical Education, Health Occupations Students of America shined in the Nevada State Leadership Conference held at the Nugget Casino Resort in Sparks, Nev. last month. More than 1,000 students from across the state of Nevada competed in more than 40 medical competition events.

An adult father and son from Wisconsin were sentenced and fined this week in the Seventh District Court of Ely for poaching a bull elk in White Pine County in November of 2015, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife.

On Wednesday, March 14, the Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) will present a talk by Carson City’s Arts & Culture Director Mark Salinas.

His illustrated talk, "Choices, Chances, and Changes," is part of CCAI’s ongoing Nevada Neighbors series and will take place at 6 p.m. at the Union restaurant, 302 W. Proctor St in Carson City.

There will be an informal reception for Salinas preceding the event at 5:30 p.m. No tickets needed; the public is cordially invited.

Comma Coffee is hosting a reception for their newest display, the ‘Break These Chains Live Free’ Art Exhibit, featuring the winning pieces from a high school contest designed to bring awareness to human trafficking. A cute new shop downtown, Rustically Divine, celebrates it’s Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting.

Allison MacKenzie Law Firm accepts Volunteer Attorneys for Rural Nevadans (VARN) community service award. The firm has received recognition for providing free, exceptional legal services to low-income rural Nevadans. The VARN Pro Bono Service Awards reception was held at the Supreme Court Rotunda on Thursday, January 25, 2018.

A 45 year-old man was taken into custody Thursday evening at 5:53 p.m. at a business in the 900 block of South Carson Street after being found in possession of a controlled substance, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy said.

The Nevada State Controller’s Office Information Technology Division, under the direction of Linnette Ollson, has been holding monthly team building exercises. On August 28, 2016, Edith W. Fritsch Elementary School 8-year-old 3rd grader Chloe Woodbury announced her state service project for the Children of the American Revolution, U.S. Flag retirement bins, at a dedication ceremony of the first bin placed at the Carson City Library and attended by Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell and other elected officials and featured in local news media and on Reno television.

The Nevada Area Council honored University of Nevada, Reno President Dr. Marc Johnson with the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award Oct. 26 on the university campus. Family, friends and community professionals turned out to recognize Dr. Johnson’s long and distinguished career as an educator.

Open House, Open Hearts is a community event focused on building bridges to local services for teens and their families, increasing parent and guardian engagement at CHS, and celebrating the community, creativity and diverse talents of Carson City.

More than 25 local community service providers will line the hallways of Senator Square for a community fair beginning at 4:30 p.m. The fair will highlight Carson City activities, family friendly events and provide information and screenings for a variety of local health services.
