Lake Tahoe may have elevated risk for plague after chipmunk tests positive
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 10/10/2012 - 11:49amThe U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is advising visitors to its recreation sites to take precautions against plague after a chipmunk found at Taylor Creek Visitor Center tested positive for the disease. Acting on the recommendations of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), the Forest Service and its concessionaire have posted extensive signage in the area of Taylor Creek Visitor Center, the Tallac Historic Site, and Camp Richardson Resort explaining how the disease is transmitted, the symptoms and how to prevent infection.

Motorcycle crash slows down Carson City traffic
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 10/05/2012 - 6:18amA motorcyclist was injured this morning after crashing at the intersection of Fairview and Saliman in Carson City. The motorcyclist was reportedly transported to the Carson City Airport where he was airlifted to Renown Medical Center.
The accident, reported shortly after 7 a.m. had the westbound lane of Fairview shut down as paramedics responded to the motorcyclist, who was conscious but suffered from a back injury, according to EMTs on the scene.
No other vehicles were said to be involved in this morning's crash, according to authorities at the scene.

Some Forest Service facilities at Lake Tahoe to close for season

Campgrounds and day-use areas traditionally close around mid-October. While forest roads typically close around mid-November, you may consult the Motor Vehicle Use Map for specific dates by going here. The Taylor Creek Visitor Center will remain open through October, according to a news release.
Lake Tahoe Asian clam control project taking place at Emerald Bay

Car drives into Carson City Eye Center, three injured
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 10/04/2012 - 8:12amAt least two people sustained non-life threatening injuries and one was treated at the scene after a car drove into The Eye Center at 1299 Mountain Street in Carson City. The accident was reported shortly after 9 a.m. Witnesses to the accident said they heard a crash and saw that a car was inside the storage area of the building.
Two people were inside the car that was in the building. Both were able to get out though one person was partially trapped. A Jeep was clipped by the car before it went into the building. Debris from the accident area was scattered about 30-40 feet.
One hospitalized after South Lake Tahoe hashish lab explodes

As firefighters began to extinguish flames from unit 1 downstairs, police officers assisted with the evacuation of the entire complex.

Dayton students take flight aboard Care Flight as part of fundraising program

After a pre-flight briefing the participating students — Isabelle Villafana, Nadia Macias and Cynthia Soto — climbed aboard and soared on a Care Flight air ambulance for a first-hand look at how it functions.
The students, two juniors and a senior are enrolled in Dayton High School’s HOSA; Future Health Professionals class.
Carson City leaders look at appraiser for possible land swap with family trust

The Potter Family Trust would receive the equivalent in city land if such a land trade were to happen.
As part of the process, Carson City leaders will decide when they meet Thursday whether to appoint Stephen R. Johnson and Associates as the indendent appraiser for the potential exchange.
