Addressing bullying and LGBT teens: A workshop for parents and community members

The workshop will be led by Christopher Daniels, who is an educator with Planned Parenthood Mar Monte. It begins at 7 p.m. at the BRIC (Business Resource Innovation Center), 108 East Proctor Street, Carson City, Nev. The public is invited to attend.

Brown of northern Nevada first learned he had prostate cancer back in 1995. “I tell people who are diagnosed, there is no need to panic, although I certainly did, at least 52 times or more,” he said laughing. “I’ve learned this is something you can control and live with because it is manageable. “
NHP reports few DUI arrests during critical New Year's celebration hours
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 01/01/2013 - 7:40amMore than 275 traffic enforcement stops were made by Nevada Highway Patrol troopers on Northern Nevada highways in a 10-hour period from 7 pm Monday until 5 am Tuesday morning.
Only seven motorists, or roughly three percent, stopped during that timeframe were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Many of those motorists stopped were designated drivers for passengers riding in the vehicle who were celebrating the New Year and had already consumed alcohol.
Weather conference at Lake Tahoe to feature Nobel Prize team winner

Field, was the Co-Chair for Working Group II of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) which shared the 2007 Peace Prize with former Vice President Al Gore. He’s the director of the Department of Global Ecology, Carnegie Institution for Science at Stanford University and a 2009 Heinz Award recipient, recognizing extraordinary environmental achievement.

NHP responds to 92 crashes on area roads
Submitted by admin on Thu, 12/27/2012 - 8:18amTroopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol responded to and investigated 92 motor vehicle crashes in northern Nevada between 10:00 am yesterday through 6:00 o’clock this morning. 33 crashes involved some sort of injuries while the remaining 59 were property damage only collisions. Most of the crash activity was in the greater Reno-Sparks area with only a handful of crashes reported in the rural parts of northern Nevada. The largest volume of calls for service took place late last night and early this morning.
Carson City Sheriff's Office to step up saturation patrols over New Year's holiday period
Submitted by editor on Wed, 12/26/2012 - 5:35pmThe Carson City Sheriff's Office will maintain a highly visible presence on the city's roadways during the New Year holiday, which begins at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28 and ends at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2.
Sheriff's deputies will be out in force during this time period and will conduct saturation patrols to detect, arrest and prosecute impaired drivers to the fullest extent of the law.

Carson City roommates fight over computer repair time, one jailed for battery
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 12/24/2012 - 3:59pmA 63-year-old Carson City man was arrested Dec. 22 after allegedly pushing and punching his roommate, a senior citizen, to the ground in an argument over a computer issue.
The victim, said to be at least 65 years of age, went to the Carson City Sheriff's Office at 5:53 p.m. to report the battery. He told authorities that his roommate broke his cell phone in half when he attempted to call police for help.
NHP identifies Reno woman who died in Mount Rose Highway crash
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 12/24/2012 - 9:44amA 50-year-old Reno woman has been identified as the victim of a fatal accident Friday on State Route 431, Mount Rose Highway, east of Joy Lake Road in Washoe County, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.
Tracy L. Scott died after the 2001 GMC Yukon XL she was driving was struck by a Dodge pickup towing a two-axle utility trailer driven by a 36-year-old Reno man. Scott was traveling westbound on the two-lane highway at the time of the crash.
Woman dies, two injured in accident on Mount Rose Highway
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 12/21/2012 - 5:25pmA woman died Friday and two were injured in a vehicle accident east of Joy Lake Road on State Route 431, Mount Rose Highway, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.
The accident happened shortly before 2 p.m. and closed the highway for more than an hour. The woman's name has not been released pending notification of family members.
Nevada Highway Patrol offers travel and safety tips for Christmas holiday motorists

Long holiday weekends generally means more motorists traveling on our state’s roadways thus increasing the calls for service for our agency. Please assist us with our highway safety efforts this holiday season by always driving with safety in mind first, being courteous to others motorists, and never drink and drive.
Flu Vaccine and Pediatric Immunization Services at Sierra Nevada Health Center

They are accepting new patients who would like to receive the flu vaccine. They are also offering pediatric immunizations on Dec. 20 and Dec. 27 from 1 to 4 p.m. at 3325 Research Way. No appointment is necessary.

For the past several weeks Capitol Police officers and Nevada Department DPS staff members have been collecting new unwrapped toys, bicycles and warm clothing in Carson City to assist the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves with its the Toys for Tots collection drive effort.
Carson City authorities arrest man with gas can, burglary tools

The 34-year-old man was arrested at 1:09 a.m. Dec. 18 in the 300 block of Hot Springs Road and faces charges of petit larceny, gross misdemeanor possessing burglary tools, possession of stolen property, tampering with a motor vehicle and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Lake Tahoe Mobility 2035 Transportation Plan approval brings emission reduction strategy online

Passage of the Sustainable Communities Strategy makes Tahoe the fourth region in the state of California to approve a plan that complies with new greenhouse gas emissions legislation, according to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) and Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization (TMPO).

Carson City road maintenance report for Dec. 17-23

A sidewalk project will continue on Silver Sage Drive in the vicinity of Sean Drive and Stafford Way. The work will primarily be on the side of the road, but minor delays are possible.
There will be sidewalk maintenance at the intersection of Carson Street and College Parkway. No delays are expected.
Swim program for autistic children and adults developed at Carson City Aquatic Facility

This program is a first of its kind in the Carson Valley and is designed specifically to expose children and adults with autism or ASD to the water. The swim hour is free of charge to anyone affected by Autism and is the precursor to the Joe Lopez Adaptive Swim program which will teach water safety and swim lessons to those on the spectrum and is set to begin in the first quarter of 2013.
