The Nevada legislature just gave the finger to every law enforcement officer who daily puts his or her life on the line in the fight against illegal drugs. Officers like the Carson City deputies who discovered a boy being held in a makeshift home prison by his meth-addicted parents.

The same day that story broke, State Senator Sheila Leslie had to pull a bill that is designed to seriously interrupt the availability of essential ingredients for methamphetamine production, because it didn't have the support it needs to pass the Senate.

It's hardly a surprise.

CARSON CITY –Assemblyman William Horne, D-Las Vegas, nudged his bill out of committee today, meaning the state could secure anywhere from $20 to $50 million from the casino industry.
Under Assembly Bill 219, if you lose or do not redeem a paper voucher printed from a slot machine, the state would sweep that money into its coffers as unclaimed property. Right now, casinos pay taxes on that money and count the remainder as revenue.

Nevada casinos didn't have a great February, with the gaming win down 6.84 percent statewide compared to prior year.

The Gaming Control Board report for February showed the Las Vegas Strip down 9.56 percent, while North Lake Tahoe was down more than 15 percent. The Carson Valley area that included Carson City was down 2.89 percent.

For the fiscal year, the state gaming win is still in positive territory, but barely, .09 percent over prior year.

A few minutes after Rep. Heller announced his U.S. Senate run this morning, an invitation to a March 28 fundraiser at Panevino went out to major donors.
Host donation is $5,000, attendees are $1,000 per person or $1,500 per couple.

Casinos in Carson City and Carson Valley saw a 10.57 percent increase in "win" revenue for the month of January, the Nevada Gaming Control Board reports this morning.

The Carson City region, which includes Gardnerville and Minden, took in revenues of just over $8 million, up from $7,016,253 from January 2010.

Casinos at South Shore Lake Tahoe saw a 7.85 percent decline in gaming "winnings" over January 2010. North Tahoe had an increase gaming win of slightly over 1 percent.

Recent indicators show tourism at Lake Tahoe South Shore is improving, according to the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority.

December occupancy was up three percent compared to last year (Smith Travel Research). The No. 1 ski destination in the U.S. (Rand McNally 2011; TripAdvisor 2010) has seen a rise of 1.7 percent through Reno-Tahoe International Airport since July; 14 percent more skiers and snowboarders on the slopes, increased bookings over holiday weekends, and advance reservations for summer.

Statewide gaming revenue decreased nearly 2.4 percent in December, with Carson City and Carson Valley down 3.5 percent, according to Nevada Gaming Control Board figures released today.

For the fiscal year, however, gaming win has increased 1.5 percent statwide and 1.09 percent for the Carson City area, the state's gaming board shows.

On the plus side, Reno casinos saw a gaming win of 1.74 percent; as did Elko County. See attached PDF.

Gaming revenue for the Carson City and Carson Valley areas for fiscal year 2010 were among the state's best considering overall statewide declines, according data released today by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

Gaming Revenue for the Carson City and Carson Valley area was down 4.3 percent for fiscal year 2010 over 2009 figures. The Las Vegas strip reported the best revenue figures, down 3.1 percent, according to the control board.

Ramping down Nevada’s dependence on the gambling industry (and associated consumer spending) through developing new job-creating industries was the main topic at last Friday’s Nevada 2.0 economic forum at UNLV.
Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki used the word “retooling” as he spoke of the need for diversity in his opening remarks, adding that he did not believe the vision of  an economically robust Nevada was “Pollyanna-ish.”

Carson City and Carson Valley casinos saw a 2.57 percent increase in gaming win in November, the state gaming control board reports this morning. Statewide gaming numbers, however, decreased by nearly 5.9 percent over last year.

Elsewhere nearby, Washoe County saw sharp declines, with Reno gaming numbers dropping by nearly 21 percent and Sparks by nearly 15 percent, the Nevada Gaming Control Board reports.

At Lake Tahoe, Stateline casinos saw a 5.25 percent decrease in gaming win in November, with North Tahoe casinos seeing a 7.7 percent decrease.

Three men were treated for injuries with two hospitalized after a stabbing in the early morning hours following the New Year's celebration at Lake Tahoe in Stateline, a Douglas County Sheriff's Office sergeant reports.

Violence on Sunday that led to near-tragedy ended today with the arrest of a 17-year-old Carson City boy. The incident is a reminder of how fragile children can be and how early intervention can prevent something like this from happening again.

CARSON CITY – When it comes to the budget problems looming for many states over the next two years, a report released this week by the National Conference of State Legislatures makes one point very clear: Nevada is No. 1, and not in a good way.

CARSON CITY – Gov. Jim Gibbons announced today the retirement of Information Technology Director Dan Stockwell after 47 years in the field, including 14 years with the state of Nevada.
“I consider Dan Stockwell a consummate professional and a good friend,” Gibbons said. “He can be proud of his service to the citizens of Nevada.”
“I would like to thank all of wonderful public service professionals I have worked with over the years with the State of Nevada,” Stockwell said. “We have truly laid the foundation for a bright future for our state.”

CARSON CITY – Nevada Republican Gov.-elect Brian Sandoval announced today his selection of 29 Nevadans to serve on his transition advisory team, including Bill Bible, former president of the Nevada Resort Association, and state Sen. Dean Rhoads, who backed Sen. Harry Reid’s re-election bid.
The diverse group of community leaders from across Nevada will provide input and feedback to Sandoval on a wide range of issues.

When I was at the Nugget Advisory Committee meeting last week, a PR person working for P3 Development and the Carson Nugget handed me a list of Frequently Asked Questions about the project.

One thing a complex project like this could really use is an FAQ list. Of course, this list came from those developing the project, so a little spin was to be expected. But I was surprised at how much spin there was.

It’s hardly a surprise to those living in Nevada that the unemployment rate is high, 14 percent more or less depending on who’s counting. The state is in a hole because of poor tax structure, decreased tourist visits and encroaching California Indian casinos, among other things.

And all the experts are predicting a slow growth and return to the basic 3 or 4 percent unemployment.
The Obama Adminnistration in Washington says we’re on the track to recovery and if we can just control the lunacy that is the New York Stock Exchange and others we’ll be all right.
