Carson City road construction projects continue through Aug. 22

Summer road construction projects continue this week in Carson City as the Nevada Department of Transportation, contractors and city crews continue work throughout the region.

Here is the Carson City road construction report through Aug. 22. As always, expect some delays in the project areas, be courteous and give crews "a brake" in the designated road construction zones.

With the continuing Nevada Department of Transportation project at the Carson City freeway, the following closures are planned:
— Valley View Drive has been permanently closed between Edmonds Drive and Line Drive.

Dozens apply for 130 positions at new Carson City Kohl's; job fair continues through Thursday

A job fair to fill 130 positions at the Carson City Kohl's store continues through Thursday at the Carson City Plaza Hotel Conference Room.

Applicants can go to the job fair today, which runs through 7 tonight, or can apply online at www.kohlscareers.com, or call (877) 639-5645. The store will be at the former Mervyn’s building on South Carson Street between Koontz and Eagle Station lanes, and is set to open in September.

Carson City road construction report for today through Sunday

Here is the Carson City road construction report for today, Monday, through Sunday, Aug. 15. With the next phase of the freeway project by the Nevada Department of Transporation, the following closures are planned:

— Valley View Drive has been permanently closed between Edmonds Drive and Line Drive.

— Koontz Lane will be closed between Raglan Circle and Edmonds Drive until January 2011.

The Roop Street widening project is continuing and is expected to be completed by the end of 2010. The following impacts are expected this week:

The Reno-Gazette Journal reports tonight that after 27 years Carson RV has shut its doors.

Kohl's to hold Carson City job fair Aug. 8-12 to fill 130 positions

A job fair to hire 130 positions at the new south Carson City Kohl's store will be held Aug. 8-12, company officials said today.
The job fair will be at the Carson City Plaza Hotel Conference Center, 801 South Carson Street, Carson City.

Business growth picks up on South Carson

We had heard rumors of recent activity at the never-opened Sportsman's Warehouse store in the Southgate Center on South Carson Street.

And now, it looks like there will be a new Big Lots store moving in this fall.

While a discount closeout store isn't exactly the kind of high-end (or medium-end) store residents might have been hoping for, it's better than an empty storefront.

New Carson City Stadium Cinemas opens today

The Nevada Appeal and the Reno Gazette-Journal both have good information on today's opening of the new Carson Stadium Cinemas, at 2571 North Carson Street, formerly known as the Northgate Movies 10.

Carson City man faces felony charge after allegedly biting girlfriend on the chin

A Carson City man faces a felony assault charge after he had a fight with his girlfriend and allegedly grabbed her by the neck and bit her on the chin.
Jesus Atan-Lopez, 31, was arrested at around 10 p.m. in the 3300 block of Carson Street. His bail was set at $5,000.

Three years and walking, Carson City group remains dedicated to our troops

As we go about our business after work on Fridays, celebrating the end of the week, about 30 people clad in red t-shirts and carrying American flags have gathered for three years running to walk down Carson Street in support of our American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
I first met Mike McElfish, organizer of the Friday Red Shirt Walk, in September 2008 after he helped coordinate a similar walk in memory of Army Sgt. Timothy Smith of South Lake Tahoe who was killed by an improvised explosive device in Baghdad on April 7, 2008.

Here is the Carson City area road construction report for Monday, July 26 through Sunday, Aug. 1. Expect some minor delays along the way.

As a result of the next phase of the Nevada Department of Transportation freeway project, the following closures will be in place:
— Valley View Drive will be permanently closed between Edmonds Drive and Line Drive beginning Monday, July 26.
— Koontz Lane will be closed between Raglan Circle and Edmonds Drive until January 2011.

A Carson City Chamber of Commerce mixer will be held tonight at Carson City Toyota Scion, beginning at 5 p.m.

 The Roop Street widening project will continue and is expected to be completed by the end of of the year. The following impacts are expected for the Carson City area in the coming week:

— Roop Street is closed to through traffic from William Street to Robinson Street.  This closure is expected to last through early September, but business access will be provided.

Man arrested after allegedly throwing an elbow into a Carson City deputy's head

A 28-year-old Carson City man faces a gross misdemeanor charge of battery on a police officer, and a misdemeanor resisting charge after he allegedly elbowed an officer in the head on Sunday morning outside of a bar.
Carlos Edwards Lopez was taken into custody following the alleged assault. His bail has been set at $4,612. Deputies were dispatched to the 300 block of North Carson Street at about 2 a.m. after there was a report of a fight in progress, according to the arrest report.

Here are the road construction projects in the Carson City area for Monday, July 12 through Sunday, July 18. Expect some delays and use caution in the construction zones.
The Roop Street widening project will continue this week with the following impacts expected:
— Effective Thursday, July 8, Roop Street will be closed to through traffic from William Street to Robinson Street.  This closure will last through Sept. 1.
—The intersection of Caroline Street and Roop Street will be closed to through traffic through Sept. 1. Traffic may cross Roop Street at Washington Street.

Gardnerville man steals four cases of beer for birthday party, arrested for shoplifting and meth possession

A Gardnerville man, who told authorities he was planning a birthday party but didn't have enough money for beer and so he decided to steal four cases of it, faces felony shoplifting and possession of methamphetamine charges after being arrested Wednesday.
Jay William Dunkelberg, 53, was detained by Safeway store personnel following a foot chase. He was subsequently interviewed by Carson City Sheriff's Office personnel where he confessed to shoplifting and meth possession, according to the arrest report. Bail is set at $5,000.

Stage is set for Concert Under the Stars on July 14 in Carson City

With the Capital City filled with daytime summer events, the night will come alive on Wednesday, July 14, with the second annual Concert Under the Stars. at Adele's Restaurant and Lounge in Carson City.
