Tuesday serves up pancakes, coffee, and lots of laughs

If you know where to look, every day is National something-or-other day. Today gets pancakes, and the International House of Pancakes is celebrating accordingly with a free short stack. It is a fundraiser for the Children’s Medical Network, so leave something for the organization in addition to the tip. CASA, Court-appointed Special Advocates, is always looking for more volunteers to stand up for children. Join them for coffee and find out more about this great organization.

Here is an updated parade list for all the entries in the Nevada Day Parade on Saturday. Note, there was a last-minute change in streets where the entries are supposed to line up that is different than the printed program. The change was made to accommodate some larger floats. Artists readying for statewide art show in Carson City ahead of Nevada Day Parade

As a highlight for the upcoming statewide art show, Capital Collage, Mark Salinas commissioned Las Vegas papier mache artist Justin Favela to create three, alien-themed piñatas. However, the piñatas won’t just be on display, they will be broken in traditional custom during the art show.

I hope you’ve got your Halloween costume ready. A week of various Halloween activities, trick-or-treats, and festivities for the kids begins tomorrow with the first ever Boo-nanza: a family-friendly collaboration between the Community Center, Carson City Library, and Aquatic Center. Tonight, the over 21 crowd gets to enjoy a costume contest at Alatte inside the Carson Nugget, with many more parties on the way.

Calling all Geeks. After a long hiatus, the Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz has returned to Carson City, and is setting up shop inside Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint on Tuesday nights. Grab your smartest friends for a fun night of yummy drinks, great food, and nerdy competition. It's National Register to Vote Day - Carson residents can go to the County Clerk's office in the Courthouse. While you're there, head to the CCAI Gallery on the second floor to catch the last few days of the 'Industrial Art: Sports Edition' exhibit.

Mark Salinas, Carson City’s Director of Arts and Culture, has been appointed to the board of the Nevada Arts Council by Gov. Brian Sandoval.

Art exhibits in Carson City set for Friday receptions

Art lovers will have two receptions to attend in Carson City on Friday evening. Gil Martin, who makes his own paint from natural earth pigments that he digs up from various sources in the western United States, will feature his work in the “From the Ground Up” exhibit presented by the Capital City Arts Initiative Friday through May 24 at the Courthouse Gallery.

Saturday's drenching rain notwithstanding, playing in mud just got easier in Carson City with the opening of Ogres-Holm Pottery in the Carson Mall.

The pottery studio, learning center and gallery cut the ribbon Saturday at 1308 South Carson Street inside the Carson Mall.

A huge shout-out to the Carson City Arts and Culture Coalition: their Focus on Carson Photography Contest has concluded and the winners will be featured on a banner at Telegraph and Curry. The installation goes up at 10:30 a.m. today, and they could use a hand or two. The Wednesday Evening Farmers Market is in full swing and hits Third and Curry at 4 p.m.

Draft of Carson City Arts and Culture Master Plan now available for review

The Carson City Cultural Commission has been working with Ms. Kendall Hardin, Idea Factory to develop an Arts and Culture Master Plan for Carson City.

This plan was an outgrowth from the Commission’s public workshop that occurred last month with Ms. Hardin. During this workshop, the Commission was able to reach a general consensus on the policies, content, and overall direction of the Master Plan. Many of the ideas generated at the workshop have been incorporated into the DRAFT Arts and Culture Master Plan being released Tuesday by Carson City.

Dancers can choose from country line dance at Carson Lanes or swing dance at El Charro Avita. Capital Eats inside of Westside Pour House just started a Tuesday night Basque dinner, but you’ll want to call for reservations and information on this week’s menu. Get your wing fix Firkin and Fox: it’s all you can eat chicken wings today. Save room for dessert, though, National Ice Cream Cone Day is worth celebrating.
