Expected late snowmelt pushes Carson City Off-Road cycling event to last weekend in June

CARSON CITY — In order to deliver on the objective of giving mountain bikers a true backcountry experience on world-class singletrack that challenges riders as much as it inspires and rewards, and allowing for extra snowmelt time in a potentially record-setting Sierra Nevada winter, Epic Rides announced a date change of the Carson City Off-Road from June 14-16 to June 28-30.

CARSON CITY — Since Rockabilly Riot started in 2010, Lindsey Harrison has attended each show, particularly the pin-up contest. “I’ve watched it every year, but I was never confident enough to try it,” she said.

Last year, however, fresh off a divorce and ready to dive into new things, Harrison submitted her photos for consideration for the Miss Rockabilly Riot pin-up contest.

Controller’s Annual Report on Nevada State Taxes

This fourth column on the Controller’s Annual Report (CAR) analyzes state taxes. Nevada collected $5.523 billion in taxes in fiscal year 2017, which was 41 percent of total state revenues. As discussed in our previous column, program revenues made up 56 percent, with miscellaneous items at three percent.

The largest tax sources were sales and use taxes ($1.285 billion or 23 percent of general revenues of $5.895 billion), gaming taxes ($897 million or 16 percent) and unemployment assessments ($825 million, or ten percent). All other taxes totaled $2.516 billion, or 43 percent).

Shaheen Beauchamp Builder gives Carson Mall exterior upgrades

CARSON CITY — Shaheen Beauchamp Builders has begun an exterior facelift on the Carson Mall under request from The Carrington Company, owners of the mall. The mall and all of its stores will be open and accessible during the project, which is expected to be completed in under three months.

Hot rods, classic cars and motorcycles flood Carson City through the weekend

Engines will be revving across Carson City this weekend as three car shows and a motorcycle competition roll into town. Mills Park will host the bulk of the shows on Saturday — Rockabilly Riot, T-Buckets and the Carson City Motor Officer Challenge.

“They couldn’t believe it,” said Gilbert Dixon, president of the Nevada-California chapter of the club. “You’re just 25 minutes from seeing a majestic lake in the mountains. They’ve been begging us every year to do it again.”

The weather is warming up providing for another great season activities throughout Carson City and Northern Nevada. One of my favorite things about spring and summer is to share as many local events, food, music, the arts and entertainment with you. We have many festivities, activities and fundraisers being planned for the coming months.

Putting Main Street on a Road Diet

On March 14th I attended a workshop presented by the Carson City Public Works Department. The presentation outlined a proposal to create a pedestrian-friendly environment on Carson Street through the downtown area of Carson City between Fifth Street and Ann Street. This Road Diet, as they are commonly called, would include using striping to reduce travel lanes from four to two, and add on-street parallel parking.
