Popular luau event to benefit Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada returns Sunday

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada is pleased to announce the return of their annual fundraiser, “Annual Auction and BBQ Luau” scheduled for Sunday at the Marv Teixeira Pavilion at Mills Park in Carson City. All proceeds from this event will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada.

2015 National Night Out Carson City returns Tuesday to Mills Park

With the theme of violence prevention, Carson City Sheriff’s Office will host 13 years of community partnership with local agencies, groups and nonprofit organizations Tuesday at Mills Park with the 2015 National Night Out.

Returning this year after a last minute cancelation in 2014 because of heavy rain, this three hour annual family event is designed to bring children and their parents to the park for activities, music, information booths, demonstrations, hot dogs and refreshments. Festivities begin at 5 p.m.

Foundation helps family of Seeliger student with brain cancer at Saturday lemonade stand

A lemonade stand continues until around 1 p.m. today, with to help a Carson City boy recovering from brain cancer.
Anthony Cox Jr., a 9-year-old Seeliger Elementary student, was at the stand to greet friends, neighbors and passersby by at the Boys and Girls Club in Carson City.

Westergard bids farewell to Carson City library, hometown

After five years as the deputy director of the library and a lifetime in Carson City, Tammy Westergard is leaving for Oregon to take over as the director of the Jackson County Library District. She will begin the job June 1, overseeing 15 libraries that serve about 200,000 patrons.

Rotary Club of Carson City gears up for April's Beer and Pizza Championships

Now considered a Carson City spring tradition, the Rotary Club of Carson City will play host to its fourth annual Carson City Beer and Pizza Championships at the Carson Mall on Saturday, April 25.

The community is welcomed to taste, judge and enjoy finely crafter beer brewed from around the region and piping hot fresh pizza tossed and baked from local restaurants. Sixteen respected craft beer brewers and microbreweries will offer their top selections to attendees as they compete for awards during the Championships.

Teen competes for Youth of the Year, breaks down barriers

Avatar: The Last Airbender was a groundbreaking cartoon released ten years ago. It featured an ensemble cast of characters ranging from a woman of color to a young disabled girl, all of whom were integral to the storyline and helped the hero save the day.

CW and Mr. Spoons will get your toes tapping at Comma Coffee at lunchtime. It’s the last week to catch the New Year’s Show at the NAA Gallery at the Brewery Arts Center. High Sierra Swing Dance Club will be dancing the night away at El Charro’s for their weekly Club Night Out.

Carson Elks Lodge supports Character Counts! poster contest

The Carson City Elks Lodge #2177 collaborated with Partnership Carson City to sponsor a Character Counts! poster contest at the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada.
Contest participants were asked to pick one of the six pillars of good character: Caring, Trustworthiness, Fairness, Respect, Responsibility, and Citizenship, and create a poster exemplifying that trait.

Character Counts! launches in Carson City

Partnership Carson City is initiating Character Counts! in our community, beginning with the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada and the Park and Recreation after school programs.

Character Counts! is dedicated to strengthening the character of America’s citizens with a consistent set of ethical values. These values, which are not politically, racially, or religiously based, are called the Six Pillars of Character: Trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.

Miss USA Nia Sanchez celebrates Nevada homecoming with Carson City visit

Recently crowned Miss USA 2014 Nia Sanchez spent Wednesday in Carson City, the first celebration trip since becoming the first Miss USA from Nevada. She was crowned June 8.

Sanchez was officially greeted into the city by Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell, Carson City Visitors Bureau Director Joel Dunn, Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada members and the Carson High School Senators cheerleading team.

Carson Station collects cash in July to Benefit Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada

The Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada have picked the Carson Station Hotel Casino in Carson City as its spotlight business of the month. This means for the entire month of July, General Manager Bruce Jabbour and his staff and their customers will be collecting money for a donation to the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada.

Carson City restaurant and food inspection report through June 4

Food and restaurant inspections are made weekly by the Carson City Health and Human Services Environmental Health Division.

Inspections through June 4, 2014 include convenience stores, bars and lounges, the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada, the Carson City Community Center, restaurants and fast food restaurants. Out of the 21 inspections, 13 received Grade AA scores of 100.

The Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada have picked Johnny Rockets restaurant inside the Carson Lanes in Carson City as their spotlight business of the month. This means for the entire month of June, general manager Tamara Jennings, the Johnny Rockets staff and customers will be collecting funds for a donation to the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada.

Carson City District Attorney's Office presents Mom’s Program awards

Carson City District Attorney Neil Rombardo and Assistant District Attorney Mark Krueger recognized moms and their children at the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada.

The awards were in recognition of the first graduating pre-school class of the District Attorney’s Moms Program and recognition to the moms for learning new parenting and job skills to help them into the future, according to a news release.

Carson City Rotary work day spent at Boys and Girls Club

Carson City Rotary held its annual Rotary at Work Day at the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada on the Saturday after Earth Day.

This year the Rotary replanted three large garden beds so the children who visit can plant flowers and vegetables. In addition, interested young adults and children can learn how to care for, maintain and harvest plants in Northern Nevada throughout the complete gardening season.

Nevada Wolf Pack puts in a spring football warmup Saturday in Carson City

It was the first live action of the year for the University of Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack as they hosted themselves Saturday in a scrimmage at Carson High School in Carson City.

Building excitement for the season has its advantages, said Nick Rolovich, the Pack's offensive coordinator.

"It's important to engage the community and get everybody excited early," said Rolovich. "We are going the right way everyday and playing for each other. We expect everything these athletes have next season and we know for a fact that they will leave it all on the field next fall."

City National Bank gives Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada share of community grant

The Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada in Carson City was among 15 charitable organizations in four states to receive a portion of $15,000 from City National Bank.

The bank recently celebrated its 60th anniversary and awarded community grants to charities of choice. The bank will continue to select grants on a quarterly basis this year.

Boys and Girls Club in Carson City among agencies to sponsor USDA food program

The Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada and the Washoe Tribe Head Start Office in Carson City are among the sponsoring agencies of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Child and Adult Care Food Program, Nevada Department of Agriculture announced Friday.

Winter Wine and All That Jazz benefit for the Brewery Arts Center set for Jan. 18

The Brewery Arts Center, Carson City’s premiere epicenter for the arts since 1977 has partnered with the Carson Nugget as well as various vineyards and vendors to present Winter Wine and All That Jazz, an evening of wine tasting, music, dancing, a live art demonstration, silent auction and raffles.

This annual fundraiser will be held on Saturday, January 18 at the Carson Nugget from 7pm to 10pm. Tickets are $30 per person and are available for purchase at www.breweryarts.org. For more info call the Brewery Arts Center office at 775-883-1976

Dutch Bros., Coffee in Carson City donates $1 out of every drink sold Friday to Boys and Girls Club

Dutch Bros., Coffee at 1449 South Carson Street in Carson City will donate $1 for every drink it sells Friday to the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada. Dutch Bros. will also be collecting donations from customers, so those who wish to give money to the Boys and Girls Club can do so during the fundraiser.

The fundraiser runs throughout the day during coffee shop hours.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong announces fourth term run

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong will run for a fourth term as the capital city's top law enforcement officer, announcing his 2014 re-election intentions Tuesday.

In what Furlong described as three "politically quiet but challenging years," crime statistics have trended downward since the 2010 election, which is remarkable given Carson City's economic climate as it continues to deal with the effects of a deep, prolonged recession.

Boys and Girls Club budding artists featured Friday and Saturday at Brewery Arts Center

Dozens of Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada members will showcase their acting, dance and performance art and painting skills Friday and Saturday in a community performance at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City.

For the second year, the Diving Into the Arts Academy, sponsored by the BAC, has enrolled more than 100 Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada members to its summer arts program classes.

Carson City, Lyon County agencies make United Way grant list

Carson City and Lyon County nonprofit agencies have partnered with the United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra for a second round of funding.

The Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada, Friends in Service Helping (FISH) Community Chest, Healthy Communities Coalition, Central Lyon Youth Connections, Lyon County Human Services were named as grant recipients through various partnerships, for the 2012-13 fiscal year.

In all, more than $1.3 million will be distributed to Northern Nevada agencies, said United Way spokesman Scott Walquist.

Carson City Cops and Kids open house lives up to its 'safest party on the street' reputation

With sunny skies, a gentle breeze and plenty of children and their parents, the 10th annual Cops and Kids open house, hosted by the Carson City Sheriff's Office on Saturday, lived up to its reputation as the safest party on the street.

More than 2,000 attended the four-hour event, which featured games, prizes and demonstrations by Carson City Sheriff's Office patrol officers and personnel. The event is designed for children and their parents to get quality meet-and-greet face time with law enforcement personnel.
