The members of the High Desert Swing Dance Club get together on Monday at El Charro Avita to dance the night away.

The weather may be cooler, but the chili is hot. Head to Glen Eagles for the final day of the Chili competition. Compared to the last few weekends, Carson City is downright sleepy. That just makes it much easier to get around town and explore. Sunday is the day before Independence Day, but Sparks is getting a jump on the festivities with their Star Spangled Sparks Celebration and fireworks. King’s Beach always celebrates early, so you can catch fireworks at the northeast end of Tahoe, as well. Keep reading: the weekend is in full swing.

Holy moly. Carson City is hopping with fun times for everyone. Enjoy Saturday downtown with the Third and Curry Farmers Market, the Downtown Business Association Wine Walk, and a free concert at the Brewery Arts Center. Mills Park features the return of the RSVP Carnival with rides, food, booths, games, and more.

If you thought that things were going to get quiet around town, I regret to inform you that there is one more incredible weekend on the horizon. The bicycles are off the hills, the rat-rods have sputtered home, but Independence Day weekend is next on the list. Rest up and start planning for fireworks. Mondays in Carson City are relatively quiet, but Ed's Doghouse is standing by with mimosa specials, Carson Lanes will let you bowl all day for $1 a game, and the Nevada Artists Association at the Brewery Art Center has a new show in the gallery that it would love you to come see.

The weekend isn’t over, but it’s beginning to wind down. Catch the Pet Parade as part of Dayton’s Oodles of Noodles Festival. Everyone is welcome to join in at the BMX Track at the Livermore Sports Complex: Olympic Day means free racing and no membership required. Last weekend the cyclists ruled our city, but now the hot-rodders are king of the road. The Rockabilly Riot is jam-packed with activities all over town: the races and booths at Mills Park; a street dance at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar; a tattoo show in the Community Center; a free concert at Gold Dust West; and Burlesque at the Nugget. Don’t think that’s all our valley has to offer, though, keep reading for all this weekend’s fun.

The first full moon of June is known as the Strawberry Moon. The fact that it coincides with the summer solstice today is pretty rare indeed: a once in a lifetime occurrence. Enjoy this first day of summer and keep some water handy: things are heating up this week.

Happy Fathers’ Day Carson City. The Reno Rodeo is a great way to spend the day with your progeny. The Pow Wow continues at the Stewart Indian School, and Epic Rides is still downtown. Enjoy an afternoon at the golf course: a free family golf clinic is at Eagle Valley. Head to Heritage Park in Gardnerville for a car show celebrating the Great Race.

Planes, trains, and bicycles are the theme of this Fathers’ Day weekend. Epic Rides has taken over downtown with booths, bikes, beer, music, and more. The Carson City Airport is hosting their annual Fly-in and Open house, complete with hot air balloon rides. World War II aviation buffs won’t want to miss the Wings of Freedom tour at the Minden Airport. Steampunk meets Steam trains at the Nevada Railroad Museum. I hope everyone had a great weekend: the Nevada Fair, Farmers Market, and live music were just a few of the fun things that Carson offered. The Sacred Arts of Tibet Tour has brought the monks of the Gaden Shartse Phukhang Monastery back to the Brewery Arts Center; today they’ll perform a tea offering and give a presentation on happiness. Negroni week kicks off today at the Firkin and Fox, but several local bars are participating in this fundraiser.

Ready to have some fun? Virginia City’s Chili on the Comstock Cook-off goes on all weekend. For some healthier fare, hit up the Spring Farmers Market downtown. Go fly a kite at Dangberg Home Historic Park, just past Douglas High School on Highway 88; their ‘Something in the Wind’ Celebration is both Saturday and Sunday. Don’t forget to leave non-perishable food by your mailbox: the annual ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ food drive is today. Today’s sky has something special going on. A transition of Mercury across the sun occurs from sunrise until about noon. Much love to the Mothers in our valley, and those that we love like Mothers. Treat that special lady to a day at the Carson Hot Springs. She gets to ride free with a child at the RSVP Spring Carnival. Travel to Virginia City and back on the historic Virginia and Truckee Steam Train. SUNDAY: Mother’s Day

I am not even going to attempt guessing what weather we have in store. The west side of the Sierras are notoriously unpredictable. You are much better off betting on the Kentucky Derby; and the Firkin and Fox is just the place to cheer on your favorite horse.

Heavy rain and lightning suspended the Western Nevada College-College of Southern Nevada baseball series on Thursday afternoon at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City.

The teams will pick up action at 10 a.m. Friday, with the Wildcats batting in the bottom of the fifth inning and the score tied at 2. Weather allowing, the teams will try to play two additional games following the completion of the suspended game.
