Lake Tahoe selected as start for 2011 Amgen Tour of California
Submitted by editor on Thu, 10/07/2010 - 7:01amLAKE TAHOE — The 2011 Amgen Tour of California, the largest cycling event in America, will start at Lake Tahoe, officials announced today.
Lake Tahoe’s first-ever involvement in the race will feature more than a lap and a half around the Lake beginning at the California/Nevada border in South Lake Tahoe with the Stage 1 finish at Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort in North Lake Tahoe. North Lake Tahoe also hosts the Stage 2 start at Squaw Valley USA, home of the 1960 Winter Olympics.

Yerington man dies in motorcycle crash
Submitted by editor on Tue, 09/21/2010 - 10:01amA Yerington man died on Monday after his motorcycle collided with a large truck on Highway 95A near Penrose Lane.
Michael R. Leonard, 46, died on the scene, nine miles north of Yerington, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
The preliminary crash investigation details reflect that a 3-axle 1986 White dump truck was traveling west on Penrose Lane and was approaching the intersection of Highway 95A. The large truck was being driven by 28-year-old Douglas J. Scronce of Fallon. Leonard was traveling northbound on a red 1986 Kawasaki motorcycle, according to NHP.
Tahoe Transportation District pursues federal grant to fund bikeway around Lake Tahoe

The event, sponsored by the Sustainable Living and Renewable Energy Roundup, features informational workshops, exhibits and an interactive Discovery Center with fun activities for kids — making smoothies with the bike blender, baking in solar ovens, making your own butter, beekeeping presentation, activities by Master Gardeners and the Great Basin Outdoor School. The event is free to the public.

Man with baseball bat arrested after allegedly breaking into Carson City home
Submitted by editor on Sun, 08/29/2010 - 11:06pmA Carson City man is in jail and an accomplice is at-large after the men, allegedly wielding baseball bats, broke into the home of an elderly man and stole his grandson's motorcycle.
Frederick Joseph Atherton III, 22, was jailed early Sunday morning. He faces felony charges of robbery of a person over 65 years of age, burglary of a person over 65 years of age and home invasion. Bail is $40,000.
According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched to the 1600 block of Airport Road at 1:49 Sunday morning after two men with baseball bats were seen breaking into an apartment.

Motorcycle accident near Carson City on Highway 50 at Spooner shuts down traffic
Submitted by editor on Fri, 07/23/2010 - 4:40pmHighway 50 on Spooner near Carson City is being closed in both directions this afternoon after a motorcycle accident in the west bound lane.
The accident was reported at around 4:30 this afternoon. Carson City and Douglas County emergency crews and the Nevada Highway Patrol are responding and Care Flight is preparing to land.
The accident is about 1.5 miles up Spooner Summit from Carson City in the westbound lane.
Initial reports called in by motorists to dispatch was that the motorcycle crashed and the rider was laying in the middle of the road.

Sports’ inaugural bike trek across America called Sea to Shining Sea. The group will arrive in Carson City on May 28 on their way to their Virginia Beach, Va., destination.

Carson City deputies arrest man on suspicion of passing phony $100 bills
Submitted by editor on Mon, 05/03/2010 - 9:43amA 28-year-old California man was arrested and faces felony fraud charges after he allegedly passed two phony $100 bills in exchange for a motorcycle for sale on Craigslist.
Deputies were dispatched to the Jack in the Box on South Carson Street on Saturday. The victim told officers that he had placed a motorcycle for sale on Craigslist and was contacted by the suspect who said he would buy the bike for $200.
A meeting took place at the Jack in the Box and the suspect gave the victim the fake bills and the bike was exchanged, according to the arrest report.
