Tunnel Creek Cafe Now Open

The Tunnel Creek Cafe up at Incline Village is now open! Max Jones and Patti McMullan, who currently own and operate Flume Trail Bikes at Spooner Lake, have recently opened a new cafe at Tunnel Creek Station. The cafe is located on Tunnel Creek Road near the old Ponderosa Ranch which was used for filming the 1960s television western Bonanza. Outdoors with Don Q: Many memories of Mitchell Lake, B.C.

This is the second in a series of three weekly articles about an unforgettable, trout fishing trip taken on August 16-23 to Mitchell Lake in Cariboo Provincial Park in British Columbia.
The first article last week described our travel in a single engine aircraft from Dayton, Nevada to Auburn, Washington; then to Abbotsford, British Columbia; from there to Williams Lake, B.C.; and then the last leg of our journey in a helicopter to Mitchell Lake.
This week, you will read about the people in our trout fishing party, the comfortable accommodations and the tasty meals.

New Bike Rack at Curry and Proctor Streets

With the great restaurants, brewery, and almost nightly entertainment downtown, bicycle parking is in high demand along Curry Street in Carson City. It’s not uncommon to see bikes locked to lamp posts, trash cans, and anything else solid people can find. To help alleviate the bike parking problem, Muscle Powered has installed a bike rack at Curry and Proctor Streets.

Carson City road report for Aug. 27 to Sept. 2

Here is the road report for the Carson CIty area slated for August 27 through September 2.
There will be traffic control on North Roop Street from Northridge Drive to Winnie Lane due to the construction of bicycle and pedestrian improvements.

Roop Street Bicycle and Pedestrian Project to Begin

Construction of bicycle and pedestrian facilities is about to begin on Roop Street between Winnie Lane and Northridge Drive! Although short, this stretch of road is currently one of the more dangerous areas in town for cyclists and pedestrians. Safe and well used bicycle facilities exist on either side of Lone Mountain, but cyclists must brave fast traffic and a crumbling shoulder if they wish to connect the two areas. And although pedestrians are instructed not to use this route, no other reasonable routes exist nearby.

Roop Street Bicycle and Pedestrian Project Construction about to Begin

Work is expected to begin August 27 on a Carson CIty project to provide bicycle and pedestrian improvements on North Roop Street from Winnie Lane to Northridge Drive. The Carson City Regional Transportation Commission has awarded a contract which will connect existing bicycle and pedestrian facilities in Carson City, according to a news release. Roop Street between Winnie Lane and Northridge Drive currently does not have a sidewalk or bike lanes, and people often try to use a narrow strip of concrete against a wall to travel this section of road.

Memories of the Nevada 10-In-10 challenge

The newspaper headline on page one on Aug. 15, 2002 said it all:
“They made it!”
Yes, they did! And, they did it in record-setting style.
Four athletes, who are personal friends of Elaine and I, completed 10 very physically and mentally-demanding challenges in a period of 10 grueling days, way back in 2002.
I know because we were there for each and every one of those 10 memorable days that resulted in the very first Nevada 10-in-10 Challenge going into the Nevada record book.
Those four were Karl Horeis, Jeremy Evans, Rick Gunn and K. M. Cannon.

Outdoors with Don Q: The Fourth of July will be different this year

If you have not yet made any plans to be in the Great Outdoors for the upcoming Fourth of July, you might want to heed some or all of the following tips.
Because the Fourth of July falls in the middle of the week on Wednesday this year, it will put a crimp in many folks’ plans for celebrating in the outdoors, as many of them will only have Wednesday off as a holiday.
So, their celebrating will have to occur either on the preceding weekend or the weekend following the Fourth.

With that said, consider this for either weekend:
