Second Annual Muscle Powered Gear Swap

Welcome to the 2022 Gear Swap presented by Muscle Powered! This is a fundraising event for Muscle Powered, and is intended to be a kind of community yard sale specifically for “muscle-powered” gear: bicycles, bike parts, hiking and backpacking gear, skiing and snowshoeing equipment, and general outdoor gear.

Golf tournament, annual cancer fundraiser, railbike tours and more highlight weekend events in Carson City area

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events around the Carson City region. The Dayton Chamber’s 27th annual “Making A Difference” Golf Tournament arrives Friday. Carson City Kiwanis is hosting its seventh annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day on Saturday with several activities for all to enjoy. Bike Month has always been a cornerstone for Muscle Powered to bring community together every May to share our love of biking. Back in March, as we began to watch the COVID-19 outbreak unfurl in the United States, we held out hope that we could still come together to celebrate as usual.

Bicycle month rolls through Carson City, Bike and Music Festival set for May 17

As the sun is starting to emerge in Carson City, so too are the bicycles. “I’m already hearing from people that they’re getting their bikes out of the garage,” said Randy Gaa, president of Muscle Powered, the nonprofit organization dedicated to a walkable and bikeable community.

May is National Bike Month, celebrated in communities from coast to coast. Here in Carson City, Muscle Powered hosts several fun and exciting bicycle-themed events throughout the month to satisfy everyone from the first-time cyclist to the long-term veterans.

Carson City physical education teachers participate in biking, walking safety training

On Monday, Feb. 4, 2019, Carson City physical education teachers opted in to take a comprehensive training class about biking and walking safety.

The Western Nevada Safe Routes to School (WN-SRTS) program, with the help of the Nevada Department of Transportation, conducted a “train the teacher” class for physical education teachers in the following schools:

Blinky Man: Carson City tradition rides again this Friday

Blinky Man has quickly become one of Carson City's most popular events, and is now into its sixth year of existence.

This season's event is the 12th organized ride, and will take place Friday, October 26 beginning at 6 pm with the first stop at the Tap Shack at 112 Rice Street. The event is free and open to the public, and all are welcomed and encouraged to attend.

Let’s try this again. Last week, the rain was a little too much for the Westside Cruise, so the organizers postponed it until today. The annual Westside Cruise ia a part of Bike Month, and one of the zanier events. Dress you and your bike up and head off to explore the historic district. Happy one year Anniversary to Battle Born Social. The restaurant and lounge will be celebrating with cocktails, appetizers and more; there is a $20 cover for the event, but that money will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada and Carson City Senior Center's Meals on Wheels program.

Today is definitely an out-doorsy kind of day: two Muscle Powered hikes, the Ladies Ash Canyon Bike Ride, and the annual Bike Month Full Moon Night Mountain Bike Ride. Early voting for the 2018 Primary has begun, and all registered Carson City voters can head down to the Clerks office in the Courthouse to cast their ballot. If you’re in Minden, or up for a short drive, check out the Farmers Market on Esmerelda Street. It runs from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m., so you’ll have plenty of time to grab something fresh to throw in with dinner.

Strap on a helmet and join some of our town’s notables on a ride through the historic west side. Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery is holding a reception for Jean Kvam, whose oils, pastels, and pottery will be on prominent display. Not a cloud in the sky, and yet we have been hit by a perfect storm: Cinco de Mayo, Kentucky Derby Day, and the monthly wine walk have all collided. Let me tell you, downtown is going to be hopping, not to mention the Early Season Farmers Market making its seasonal debut in the parking lot at W. Musser and N. Nevada – just behind Due Sorella. Take the kids down to Bailys Pond at Fuji Park for the annual Tom Brooks Memorial Kids’ Fishing Day. A trip to the train museum comes with the opportunity to ride on the Historic McKeen Motor Car.

On Wednesday, Sept. 20, the Carson City Leisure Hour Club recognized Muscle Powered, an organization committed to enhancing the Carson City environs and the quality of life for its citizens. Accepting the $500 donation was Randy Gaa, Secretary of Muscle Powered.

Don’t let your parade get rained out though, downtown Carson will march right through this wet stuff. The early Spring Farmers Market debuts today behind Due Sorella at Nevada and Musser Streets. Grab the kids and enjoy today’s open house with free admission at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada. Stick around for the monthly Downtown Business Association wine walk and find something for Mothers’ Day at one of our wonderful local shops.

Another good bet is karaoke at Crossroads Lounge: it’s in the East Winnie Lane shopping center with San Marcos Grill and Bleu Café. The West Side Cruiser Ride for Bike Month is a sure thing. Meet at the Brewery Art Center, costumes are highly encouraged, and then meander around our beautiful downtown with some other fun people. Living the Good Life wants you to enjoy a music jam; bring your instrument if you want to sit in.

The Nevada State Fair is in full swing and a street dance at the Pavilion starts at 6 p.m.
