Now that Autumn has arrived, it’s a great time to explore the areas east of Carson City. These trails and back roads can be impassable in the winter, muddy in the Spring, and too hot during the Summer. This time of year, though, the dry conditions and mild temperatures make it the perfect time to go. One of our favorite Fall rides is the off-road route up to Virginia City via the American Flat Toll Road. With the area’s fun and lively Old West history, this ride has started to become an annual event.

Musicians are invited to "Give What You Can and Play" before the film "Find Your Way: A Busker's Documentary" this Friday at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City. Tuneville Session invites acoustic musicians to play at the BAC Performance Hall lobby Sept. 19 from 5 to 6:45 p.m.

Hello fellow anglers, happy Independence Day to you all. There will be a lot of people out and about this weekend. If you are headed out to do some fishing this weekend, I have the place.  Number one on the list this week is Caples Lake. This is what they offer, bed and breakfast rooms, cabins on the lake, general store, 12-14 foot fishing boat, kayaks or canoe rentals.

Step back in time for a night of music that graced mining camps for decades during the gold and silver rushes of the 1850s through the 1870s. The Gold Rush Banjo will be presented free on Friday, Oct. 25, 7:30 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center.

Doors open at 7 p.m. Seating is first come first serve. The program is an evening of stories and songs on the historical mid-19th century banjo with musician and historian Chris Bayer.

Contra Dance with Sierra Contra Dance Society to live music by Local Honey Band on Oct. 13, 2013 in the Old Liberty School (Old Southside School Building / Reno Parks and Rec.), 190 E. Liberty St., Reno.

The dance starts at 7:30PM. New-dancer orientation starts at 7:15PM.

Contra dancing is similar to line dancing and square dancing, and it's always done to LIVE music. It's easy to learn, and a caller calls out all the dance moves. It's fun, sociable and aerobic.

Naughty, but hilarious comedy skits and music from vaudeville and burlesque will be presented in "A Handful Of Nickels " at 7pm on Friday, June 21 and 2pm and 7pm on Saturday, June 22 at historic Piper’s Opera House in Virginia City.

The show features musician/actor Larry Elliott, who has appeared on 'Days of Our Lives’ and in the Oscar nominated movie "The Cooler" with William H. Macy. Multi-talented Larry plays guitar, piano, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and harmonica, but not all at the same time!

Acoustic music in the dining room from 6:30-8 p.m. by Tom and Mary Kay Aufrance on vocals, guitar, Irish mandolin, banjo and accordion. Tom and Mary Kay start with music from Ireland and Scotland then branch out from their Celtic roots and also perform the music of The Eagles, The Band, Beach Boys, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys, John Denver, Michael Martin Murphy and more. You'll enjoy Irish pub songs and tunes and especially singing along to many familiar selections! This is a fun and family friendly event. No cover (free).

The Aufrances branch out from their Celtic roots and perform an eclectic blend of popular and folk music that includes songs by The Eagles, The Beach Boys, James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt, cowboys like Michael Martin Murphy, Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys, Johnny Cash, Johnny Bond, John Denver and more. There's lots of music and entertainment lined up for the weekend, not all in Carson City but certainly nearby. And, of course, the Jazz! Carson City festival continues.
Here's what you'll find this weekend:

— Genoa hosts The Old Time Music Festival in the Town Park Saturday. This is labeled as a celebration of American Roots Music and includes the Quake City Jug Band and banjo star Georgette Hall with her daughter Cecilia Yale. Breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 11. Tickets are $5.

LAKE TAHOE — Get ready for jazz, Celtic, mystery, comedy, bluegrass, percussion and a whole lot more at the Lake Tahoe Valhalla Arts, Music and Theatre Festival. The Festival takes place at the historic Tahoe Tallac site, a 74-acre setting currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a 1800’s favorite getaway for Northern California’s elite members of society.  But you don’t have to be an elite member of society to enjoy the variety of affordable and sometimes even free events at the Valhalla Festival.
