Reno Tahoe Helicopters Receives Air Carrier Certification

Reno Tahoe Helicopters / Heliminden LLC received its Air Carrier Certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Nov. 25, 2014. This certification allows the company to offer charter services for air taxi in the United States, and serving the Northern California/Reno area, including tours to Napa, Calistoga, and Sonoma.

“We are the only operators in the area to have the Air Carrier Certification. We are proud to be able to offer our clients the expanded services of air taxi,” said Claudio Bellotto, Chief Pilot and Owner of Reno Tahoe Helicopters/HeliMinden.

Sierra Nevada Corporation announces new aircraft completions subsidiary

Sierra Nevada Corporation based in Sparks, Nev., announced Wednesday the debut of Sierra Completions, its newest subsidiary. Sierra Completions is a high-end aircraft completions company that focuses on state-of-the-art design and completion of dual- and single-aisle widebody aircraft built with composite airframe.

High winds with Tuesday cold front prompt Red Flag Warning across western Nevada

A Red Flag Warning has been issued for Carson City and across Western Nevada as strong winds are expected Tuesday afternoon and evening ahead of a cold front, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Wind gusts in the valleys are expected to be 45-55 mph with gusts to 65 mph in wind prone areas while the Sierra ridges could gust to 100 mph.

Two dead when planes collide near Yerington

Two people are dead in an airplane collision that happened Sunday morning near Yerington.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said the aircraft involved in the crash around 8 a.m. were a single-engine Cessna 170 and an unidentified experimental aircraft.

Sheriff: Arrests down in Carson City over busy Street Vibrations weekend

Even with beefed up patrols in Carson City this weekend for the Street Vibrations motorcycle rally, riders were not involved in any significant arrests during its peak Friday, Saturday and early Sunday, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

“The crowds were happy, they were here for the events and nobody was here to cause a problem,” said Furlong. ”We had extraordinary patrol coverage everywhere this weekend and we were well prepared for any incident to come up and it never did.”

Senator Square: Academic achievement, scouting leadership put Carson senior in spotlight

This week’s Carson High senior spotlight is on Tyler Torres. Tyler has a GPA of 4.62 and has increasingly challenged himself with honors and/or AP classes every year, earning academic letters the past two years. He is currently taking four AP classes in his senior year. Talented and well-rounded, Tyler has been in Chamber Choir since freshman year. He has also been a member of the National Honor Society for the past three years and Link Crew for two years. To further develop his leadership ability, Tyler has been involved in Boy Scouts since middle school.

Storey County biofuel company gets $70 million DOD grant

Fulcrum BioEnergy’s Sierra BioFuels Plant that is being built in Storey County received a $70 million grant boost from the Department of Defense’s Advanced Drop-in Biofuels Production Project, Nevada Sen. Harry Reid announced Friday.

The grant award follows the Sept. 4 announcement by U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack at the National Clean Energy Summit that the Department of Agriculture had finalized a $105 million loan guarantee for the Sierra BioFuels plant.

The FBI launched a national campaign Tuesday aimed at stopping people from pointing lasers at aircraft, a federal crime because it presents danger to pilots, passengers and those on the ground. The agency is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information that leads to the arrest of any individual who aims a laser at aircraft.

Sen. Reid Announces nearly $1.4 Million in FAA grant money for Carson City Airport

Nearly $1.4 million in Federal Aviation Administration grant money has been earmarked for the Carson City Airport, said Nevada Sen. Harry Reid Tuesday. It is among 11 grants awarded to 10 rural Silver State airports for airfield improvements.

Mike Reynolds named RSVP'S Mobility Manager in Carson City

Nevada picked among six drone development centers

Nevada has been picked as one of six locations to be a center for drone development in the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration announced Monday.

As a drone development site, the state would benefit by providing thousands of jobs with an average wage of approximately $62,000; an estimated $2.5 billion in economic impact in present dollars; and an estimated $125 million in annual state and local tax revenue.

Carson City Airport secures nearly $1.4 million in federal transportation grant

Carson City Airport has landed a federal grant of nearly $1.4 million, Nevada Sen. Harry Reid announced Tuesday.

The money is among 10 grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation for rural airports in the Silver State. Carson City Airport's share amounts to $1,387,500.

Weekend air show at South Lake Tahoe canceled

The 25th Annual Lake of the Sky Airshow at the Lake Tahoe Airport has been canceled Saturday due to the air quality conditions by the two large fires burning outside of the Lake Tahoe Basin. Also canceled was Sunday's Young Eagles Flights.

Friday night's "Pre-Flight Party" with special guest speaker WWII Triple Ace “Bud” Anderson is still confirmed. Evacuations lifted, Lyon County fire near Silver City scaled down from 300 to 96 acres

UPDATE 10:30AM MONDAY: The Sierra Front Type 3 team battling the Pedlar Fire in Silver City took control of the fire at 11 p.m. Sunday night. As of 7:30 Monday morning the fire was 75 percent contained, according to the latest from Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch. Highway 341 from Highway 50 to the truck route "Y"was reopened. Highway 342 from the "Y' through Silver City to Virginia City will remain closed this morning.

Carson City Airport Open House Photos and video

Dozens of aircraft were on display Saturday at the annual Carson City Airport Open House. The annual aviation show featured teams of pilots and a variety of aircraft from around the West.

Attended by several thousand, the all-ages event brought vendors, families and scores of aviation fans to Carson City. Children enjoyed free airplane rides and the Kiwanis Club hosted a pancake breakfast.

Carson City makes 'flight plan for the future' with Saturday's aviation open house

The aviation community soars again at the Carson City Airport this Saturday with its "Flight Plan for the Future" open house — a family favorite among airplane, aircraft and aerospace enthusiasts of all ages.

The annual free event runs from 8:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Carson City Airport, 2600 College Parkway. More than 4,000 visitors attended in 2012, and this year’s open house promises plenty of excitement with dozens of aircraft on display and FREE plane rides for children 8-17 years of age.

Military Aircraft and Vehicle Museum to Open in Carson City

Cactus Air Force received approval from the Carson City Airport Authority to build a military aircraft and vehicle museum at the Carson City Airport.

Cactus Air Force’s “Wings and Wheels Museum” will be a nonprofit, public museum dedicated to celebrating aviation and military history through preserving, restoring, displaying and use of US military aircraft and vehicles from WWII to present.

Forest Service awards ‘next gen’ airtanker contract to Minden Air
