Carson City Fire Department: Prepare for record temperatures this weekend

Residents and visitors can expect temperatures to reach high temperatures from 100 to 107, with the potential to tie or break all-time record highs throughout the region.

Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 03/16/2015 - 12:51pmOur friend Drew Seitz of Dayton is asking for the public’s help in raising money to help off-set medical expenses for his mother, Karen Kerley of Minden, who was diagnosed recently with a brain tumor.
Drew writes: As we all know, my Mom, Karen has been suffering from a glioblastoma tumor in her brain. The surgery for removal was successful and the surgeon was able to remove all of the tumor. However, she has now inherited medical expenses that exceed insurance coverage. She also has to continue on with radiation and chemotherapy treatments that are going to be costly.
District Attorney presents DAWG program to Carson City Board of Supervisors

DAWG, which is an acronym for District Attorney Witness Guide, was introduced by District Attorney Neil A. Rombardo, along with Subaru, a 2-year-old Labrador retriever.
Obituary: Michelle Geri Monge Byrd
Submitted by editor on Wed, 08/06/2014 - 6:52pmMichelle Geri Monge Byrd of Reno, Nev., died July 29, 2014. She was 61. She was preceded in death by her father William G. Monge.
She is survived by her mother, Caridad Byrd; her husband of 20 years, Paul Sherman; brothers Bruce Monge and John Andriola; sisters-in-law Sevil Monge, Clara Andriola, and Gail Sherman; brother-in-law Dr. Gene Sherman; stepdaughter Jocelyn Diaz and grandchildren Sophie Diaz and Mollie Diaz of Carson City.
She is also survived by eight nieces and nephews and four grand nieces and nephews.
Red Cross, FISH open warming center at Fuji Park for Carson City area homeless

Evacuations lifted, Lyon County fire near Silver City scaled down from 300 to 96 acres

As of 7:30 Monday morning the fire was 75 percent contained, according to the latest from Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch. Highway 341 from Highway 50 to the truck route "Y"was reopened. Highway 342 from the "Y' through Silver City to Virginia City will remain closed this morning.

"I was saddened to learn of Pat's passing," said U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.
"She was a good teacher and a good friend to many Nevadans," Reid added.
"Pat was a strong advocate for change and fought for a better Nevada as chair of the Carson City Democratic Central Committee. My thoughts go out to Pat's family and friends during this difficult time," Reid stated.

Submitted by editor on Mon, 06/28/2010 - 11:29amA fire chief, emergency manager; the sheriff; the coroner; a funeral director; the hospital security manager; a sheriff’s chief deputy and a captain, the health director and other health department officials met on Wednesday to assess the community’s ability to handle a critical incident causing numerous deaths.
Incidents resulting in fatalities that exceed the normal operating capacity of the Coroner’s Office are considered mass fatality and would trigger the activation of the Mass Fatality Management Plan.

Carson City Fire Department plans May 2 evacuation and shelter drill
Submitted by editor on Mon, 04/26/2010 - 1:26pmCARSON CITY — An evacuation and sheltering exercise for the residents of the Old Clear Creek Road subdivision will be from noon to 4 p.m. on May 2, Carson City Fire Department officials announced today.
The evacuation drill in the southwest part of Carson City is being carried out in conjunction with Nevada’s 5th Annual Wildfire Awareness Week. The intention is to remind residents and homeowners that the area is within a wildland fire environment and therefore all are encouraged to protect their homes and community from embers that can attack dry brush and trees during a wildfire.
