Frigid weather: Carson City to open emergency warming shelter Wednesday for homeless

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the region later this week due to overnight temperatures predicted to be below 15 degrees. Carson City and Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, are partnering to protect those seeking refuge from the cold during the overnight period. The cold weather shelter, located at Fuji Park on Old Clear Creek road, is scheduled to open on Wednesday night beginning at 6 p.m. through Saturday night.

A 22-year-old inmate at Carson City Jail faces a gross misdemeanor charge of damage to jail property after allegedly destroying a food slot to his jail cell sometime Tuesday, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

According to the arrest report, a deputy at the jail observed the man grabbing the cover of the food slot and slamming the hinges. The four bolts secured to the door to the food slot were destroyed.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is investigating an incident at Mark Twain Elementary School on Wednesday where a 7-year-old boy picked up a teddy bear with five hypodermic needles. The boy was stuck with one of the needles, which was then tested and found positive for methamphetamine.

Last weekend HOSA members, also known as Future Health Professionals, volunteered at the RAM medical event held at Carson High School. HOSA students served as interpreters, place holders, registration assistants, dental scribes, and vision care assistants.

The students were able to put the skills that they learn in class to use. They also gained valuable experience by working alongside dentists, doctors, nurses, and optometrists. The RAM event served more than 900 people in the Carson City area.

Judge rules for Brewery Arts Center in lease dispute against Foodies Bystro

The Brewery Arts Center prevailed in Carson Justice Court Tuesday morning in the nonprofit’s quest to evict Foodies Bystro from its spot in the center’s facility at the corner of King and Division streets.

Judge Steven McMorris agreed with the BAC’s request to invalidate a portion of the lease that would have allowed Foodies to renew the lease for another three years. The judge found that the wording of the section was vague because it allowed for the lease to be renewed, but didn’t specify that the renewal would be under the same terms and conditions.

The recent zeal to bring attention to Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) has rightfully brought the topic to the fore. But I feel that the media blitz has been at the expense of other equally severe mental disabilities, the awareness of which have waned and suffered. However good the intentions toward autism coverage may be, this attention has consequently overshadowed other developmental disabilities that are just as critical to treat, and equally heart-breaking.

During this year’s legislative session, my wife and I approached our state legislators about resources for Nevada’s most underserved population: The mentally ill.
There is a health crisis in our state, one which has grown into an epidemic across the nation, but one that is especially endemic right here in the Silver State.
Having lived more than twelve years in a state that seems to cater to many human vices, this comes as no surprise to me.
