Carson City's The Basil momentarily changed hands while undergoing a corporation change, but now, original owners Bob and Nan Watanar, who also serves as head chef, are back in the kitchen of the beloved Thai restaurant.

After spending thirty years creating delicious traditional Thai food on Carson Street, Bob and Nan wanted to pay forward their hard work and good fortune to those in need.

Bob and Nan set off for Bangkok, where they funded a school for abused children who were being looked after by Nuns. They helped create a commercial kitchen at the school, where the children are now learning how to run their own restaurants.

Good times, sunny skies, activities and more are planned around the Carson City area as we head into Thursday, July 11. Hikes, bike rides, art, food trucks at Mills Park, a Carson City CASA information night, a sentimental journey along Highway 395 presentation and more are lined up for the day. Enjoy

Every child needs a hero, but abused children need Superheroes. We’ve heard a million times that kids are sponges, absorbing all that they see and hear. That includes the good, the bad and the ugly. It makes sense that they want to imitate one of the good guys in a show or cartoon. To a child, a superhero is magical. A superhero is powerful! A superhero can help keep them safe.

When I submitted my entries to the Carson City Arts and Culture Coalition's "Focus On Carson" photography contest earlier this spring, the last thing I expected was to have been selected as a contest finalist.

Twelve children died from abuse or neglect in Nevada over the last two years, according to a recent legislative auditor’s review. Another nine abused children almost succumbed to their injuries during the same time period....

UPDATE: Carson City District Attorney-Elect Jason Woodbury announced Wednesday he will appoint Kristin Luis to be Assistant District Attorney. She will replace Mark Krueger who is now serving as assistant district attorney under Neil Rombardo.

“Kristin embodies every principle I want the D.A.’s office to reflect,” said Woodbury. “She’s honest. Her judgment is sensible and consistent. And she’s the hardest working person I’ve ever known.”

Fighters Against Child Abuse is holding its Third Annual Christmas Coat, Toy and Donation Drive to benefit Carson, Douglas, and Lyon County Children. All donations stay in The Greater Carson Area, and 100% of all donations will be used to benefit an abused, neglected, or at-risk child.

FACA is seeking new clothing, socks, underwear, new coats, new toys, and Gift Cards to provide tangible goods to abused children, CASA, Austin's House Child Abuse Emergency Shelter, and Ventana Sierra, an organization that provides housing for aged-out Foster kids.

Fighters Against Child Abuse is in its final push to help greater Carson City area abused children this Christmas.

In conversations with CASA, there's a major need for new socks and underwear, sizes for all ages from 0-17 for children entering the child abuse system. These children arrive with nothing but what they are wearing.

The Carson City group of Fighters Against Child Abuse has announced their creation of "The Baby Cabinet" The creation of this program, initiated by FACA Vice President Lori Primak is designed to help struggling families due to unemployment, not qualifying for assistance under strict guidelines and awaiting determinations.

CARSON CITY – Nevada’s First Lady Kathleen Sandoval is one of only 24 nonprofit leaders in the nation to be selected for the American Express Leadership Academy sponsored in collaboration with the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL).
