Last Minute Gift Ideas for Your Outdoor Enthusiast
Time is running and you still can’t figure out what to get that special angler, hunter or outdoor enthusiast for the holidays? If you are still searching for the perfect gift for your sportsman, the Nevada Department of Wildlife has some ideas that might help.
Nevada Dream Tags:
For as little as $15 the Nevada Dream Tags offer sportsmen the chance at the hunt of a lifetime. The winners will experience hunting one of five species (elk, California bighorn sheep, desert bighorn sheep, antelope and mule deer) in any area during the entire hunting season (weapon class and weapon season still apply). The tag is similar to other western states' raffle tags, super tags and super raffles.
Purchase a $10 Resource Enhancement Stamp and $5 Dream Tag Raffle tickets this Holiday season. You can purchase Dream Tag tickets at www.nvdreamtag.org.
Wildlife Water Development Atlas, also known as the Guzzler Book:
The Guzzler Book is a valuable tool for all wildlife enthusiasts, sportsmen and women. Witness Nevada's wildlife in the wild. From big game like deer, bighorn sheep and antelope to upland game like chukar, sage grouse and rabbits, all use these water developments.
The Wildlife Water Development Atlas includes:
• 160 full color, detailed map pages covering the entire State of Nevada
• Each map drawn at 1:144,000 scale, providing remarkable detail
• Land management status information and UTM coordinates for GPS
The books are on sale for $50 at any NDOW office or go to here for a downloadable order form.
Nevada Record Book: The 2015 edition of the Nevada Record Book is out. The full-color, glossy book includes updates on big game records along with photos and stories from hunters around Nevada.
The book was first published in 1982 and has been updated every five years since. Besides the stories and updates on all of the records, the book also has studio-quality photos of record game and personal field photography from hunters in the popular “lasting images” section.
The 2015 Nevada Record Book sells for $50 and can be found in NDOW offices, Mark Fore & Strike in Reno and Sports World in Ely.
The Apprentice License:
The Apprentice Hunter License allows anyone 12 and older to hunt upland game and waterfowl (no tagged species) for one season without first completing a Hunter Education Course. The apprentice must have never previously held a hunting license and must always be accompanied and closely supervised by a mentor 18 or older who holds a valid Nevada hunting license and is willing to assume legal responsibility for the apprentice hunter. After one season those apprentices who want to continue hunting must successfully complete their Hunter Education course requirement - which in Nevada applies to anyone born after January 1, 1960 - before purchasing another hunting license.
The license is free, but with mandatory habitat conservation and license agent fees ($4) and applicable stamps (state upland and/or state and federal duck); the cost will be $14 for upland game, $29 for waterfowl or $39 for both. The Apprentice License is currently only available at NDOW regional offices statewide. You can find the forms for the license on the NDOW website at ndow.org.
