Carson City arrests: Ex-felon jailed for felony weapon offenses; man booked for suspected DUI hit and run

A 25-year-old man was arrested Wednesday for suspicion of being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm, concealing a firearm without a permit and a misdemeanor theft warrant.

Juan Pablo Guererro, listed as a Reno resident, was arrested at 10:06 p.m. in the 2200 block of East Long Street. According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched to an apartment regarding a man brandishing a firearm. The reporting party stated the male had a black gun and was waving the gun around during an argument with another male.

The reporting party described the male, who was later identified as Guererro. When a deputy arrived the suspect began running westbound through the complex. The officer gave chase and located the suspect on the back side of an adjacent apartment building.

The officer drew his weapon and began to order the man to lay down and show his hands. The suspect ignored the deputy's order and began to walk away. At one point, he reached his hand into his jacket and it appearing as if he was reaching for a weapon. The man eventually complied, and got down on the ground.

Other officers arrived on scene and detained him. He was searched for weapons and a Smith and Wesson 9mm handgun was located in his inner jacket pocket, where he was earlier reaching. A criminal history check on Guererro showed that he was convicted of felony burglary and felony home invasion, making it illegal for him to possess a firearm. The weapon was also concealed inside his jacket where the officer was unable to see it, the report states.

A records check also showed he had an active misdemeanor warrant for his arrest out of Carson City Justice Court. The warrant alleged theft. Bail: $35,250.

In other arrests:
— A Carson City man, Thomas Dias, was arrested Wednesday morning for alleged drug possession and four misdemeanor offenses: speeding 11-20 in a school zone, no insurance, driving on a suspended driver's license and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail: $5,198.

— A 22-year-old Carson City man, Mathias James Williams, was arrested Wednesday for suspicion of possession of a dangerous drug without a prescription, DUI drugs, hit and run of an unoccupied vehicle and driving with suspended registration.

According to the arrest report, deputies responded to the area near the Boys and Girls Club on Russell Way in reference to a hit and run in progress. Dispatch advised multiple reporting parties calling in to report a red Dodge Ram truck involved and fleeing the area.

Deputies scoured the area looking for the suspect. Several pedestrians pointed toward a pharmacy at 3200 Highway 50 East, where the vehicle was located in the east parking lot. The vehicle was heavily damaged and smoking, the report states.

The driver was attempting to drive off and the officer initiated a high-risk traffic stop, ordering the driver, Mathias Williams, out of the vehicle. The man complied and was detained. Officers located the man's wallet in the vehicle and while searching for a driver's license, located a single alprazolam (Xanax) pill tucked into one of the slots in his wallet. The suspect confirm the pill was Xanax. A deputy later check it online to determine that it was in fact alprazolam.

The man was read his Miranda warning and he agreed to speak. He appeared disoriented and possibly impaired. His eyes were red and watery and his speech was slurred. Due to airbag deployment and heavy damage to the vehicle, the deputy requested paramedics to respond to check the man for injuries, the report states.

Fire Department personnel arrived on scene and determined the man was not injured from the crashes. The man advised he consumed beer and Xanax the night before. He agreed to take standardized field sobriety tests and showed signs of impairment.

The suspect told officers he did not have a prescription for the Xanax and refused to state where he obtained it, referring to "guys with guns," the arrest report states.

Several other deputies searched the area for hit and run damage to vehicles. Deputies were informed the suspect struck at least one vehicle, a park bench and a tree. Officers discovered the vehicle registration had been suspended since 2019. He was taken into custody where he consented to a blood draw. Bail: $4,386.
