Senators basketball recap: Carson falls to Reed 54-52
After 38-30 victory over Hug, the Carson Senators returned to Tom Andreasen court Tuesday night ending in a tough 54-52 loss to Reed, putting them at 1-1 in conference play.
Both teams found their groove offensively during the first quarter, as Carson guard Johnny Randle and Reed forward Matt Williams scored 9 points apiece. Scoring their own shots off the dribble, and finding teammates for easy buckets inside. Heading into the second quarter, the Raiders held onto a 15-11 lead.
Ball movement was a key focus for the Senators during the second quarter, as junior guard Kahle Good racked up 3 assists finding forward Derek Barry, center Trent Robison, and guard Abel Carter for open jumpers. But the sweet shooting stroke of Reed guard Tre Stevens kept the Raider lead 25-24 to conclude the first half.
Robison found his rhythm during the third quarter, as Carson ran the offense through him. Attacking the Raider defense inside, and soaring high for many tough rebounds. Meanwhile, the combination of Williams, Stevens, and Rich Peterson continued to give the Senators problems defensively. At the end of the third quarter, Reed added to their lead 40-36.
The Senators cut into the Raider lead early in the fourth quarter, forcing multiple defensive stops that lead to transition buckets and free-throws for Randle and Carter. Once the game slowed down to within half-court, Robison added to his impressive stat-sheet with 9 points in the quarter. Reed answered with two Stevens three-pointers and another Williams layup. Putting them up 4 points with only 2 minutes remaining. Barry’s putback layup at the buzzer wasn’t enough for Carson, as they fell to Reed 54-52.
After the tough loss, Robison described how the Senators can bounce back.
“We just need to keep getting better in all aspects,” he said. “We missed a couple free throws and layups late, so we need to get better through practice and grow more as a team. I’m not too worried about it, it’s early in the season.”
For Reed, Stevens (16 points, 4-5 from 3) and Williams (15 points, 6-14) combined for 31 points during the game.
For Carson, Robison lead all scorers with 20 points (8-15, 1-2 from 3), 9 rebounds, and 2 steals. Randle finished with 12 points (4-8, 3-6 from 3) and 1 steal. Barry added 9 points and 3 rebounds, while Carter chipped in with 7 points (3-8), 4 rebounds, and 4 assists.
With the loss behind them, Carson will look to improve upon their record in league play.
