Carson City area weather: Another system to bring snow to Sierra and valley floor Sunday
Another winter storm is on the way bringing strong and gusty winds and a brief period of moderate to heavy snow on Sunday in the Sierra and then falling to the valley floor into Carson City by Sunday night.
Winds will begin to increase late Saturday night with the strongest winds anticipated Sunday morning and early afternoon, according to the National Weather Service, which which has posted a Wind Advisory and Winter Weather Advisory for the Carson City region and a Winter Storm Warning for the Sierra and Lake Tahoe.
Peak wind gusts will reach 45 to 60 mph in valleys with gusts up to 130 mph along Sierra ridges. The weather service urges homeowners to secure holiday decorations and any other loose outdoor items. Snow will begin in the northern Sierra, northeast California, and northern Washoe County Sunday morning, spreading into the southern Sierra Sunday afternoon.
For Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas, a rain and snow mix will begin Sunday morning turning to all snow Sunday afternoon and evening, with the heaviest between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Snow accumulations could be 1 to 5 inches, with the highest amounts expected above 5,000 feet, including Virginia City Highlands, North Valley and western foothills of the Sierra Front.
The heaviest snowfall is expected in the northern Sierra between approximately 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and in the southern Sierra approximately 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Snowfall rates during this period may reach 2 to 3 inches per hour in the Sierra.
The combination of wind and snow may create periods of near white out conditions in the Sierra and travel impacts are expected on Sunday with delays and chain controls likely. For the Sierra, another 10 to 20 inches of snow is expected above 7,000 feet with 6 to 10 inches around the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Avoid travel if possible and if not be sure to have a full tank of gas, chains, and an emergency kit with you. Rain in western Nevada will turn to snow Sunday late afternoon or early evening, bringing difficult travel conditions to the region, including the great Reno/Sparks/Carson City areas, according to the weather service.
