Morning vehicle thefts around Carson City on the rise as motorists warm cars unattended
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office urges morning commuters not to leave their vehicles unattended with their engines running. Around 6:30 a.m. Friday a black two-door Honda Accord was stolen from a Pheasant Drive residence as the vehicle owner stepped away from his running car.
Several similar auto thefts have happened since the cold weather began this fall, said Carson City Sheriff’s Sgt. Mike Cullen.
Vehicle thefts do increase when the weather gets cold outside. In February 2013 there were at least a dozen vehicles stolen in the morning hours around Carson City as owners turned on their cars to warm them up.
“It’s that time of year and with the early morning frost many of us tend to warm our vehicles up before we hit the road,” said Sheriff Ken Furlong. “Every year at this time we see lots of vehicle thefts as a result of cars warming up in the driveway. So we are urging caution: Protect yourself. Don’t make yourself a victim. If you’re not able to lock your vehicle while it is warming up, you may find it gone.”
