Carson City arrests: Three jailed for meth possession following traffic stop

Three women were arrested late Friday night at 10 p.m. in the 900 block of South Carson Street for suspicion of felony possession of methamphetamine, a Carson City sheriff's deputy reported.

Eva Jessica Santa Cruz and Grace Cantu Carranza, both 32 and from Carson City, as well as 30 year-old Shandra Combs of Dayton were taken into custody after their vehicle had been pulled over for a non-functioning headlight, the arrest report said.

A sheriff's deputy made contact with the driver, Santa Cruz, and her two passengers, Carranza and Combs, all of whom were identified.

Santa Cruz did not have a valid driver's license or proof of vehicle insurance. A records check through Carson City Dispatch showed previous violations for driving without a valid license. All three subjects in the vehicle showed to have prior drug histories, according to the records system.

Carranza was active with the Carson City Department of Alternative Sentencing (DAS) with a no drugs or alcohol clause, the report said.

All three subjects were asked to exit the vehicle while a K-9 unit performed an exterior sniff. The K-9 officer showed a positive alert and a subsequent vehicle search recovered a purse containing a red straw with white residue inside of it, the report said, consistent with a tooter straw commonly used to inhale crushes or powdered drugs through the nasal cavity.

Two additional straws and a Q-tip, each with suspected drug residue on them, as well as a baggie containing a trace amount of meth were also recovered from the vehicle, the report said.

The three women were detained in handcuffs at that point and Mirandized. The suspects agreed to speak with law enforcement. Santa Cruz and Carranza denied any knowledge of the drug items inside the vehicle, the report said, but Santa Cruz later admitted she had meth-related messages on her cell phone.

Combs admitted that the red tooter straw was hers, but took responsibility for nothing else found in the vehicle, the report said.

The three women were taken into custody and transported to the Carson City Jail for booking. Violation of DAS bail conditions was added to Carranza's charges.

Bail for Santa Cruz: $4,648. Bail for Carranza: $6,637. Bail for Combs: $3,637.

In other arrests:
— A 53 year-old Carson City man was arrested early Saturday morning at 12:13 a.m. in the area of U.S. Highway 50 East and Airport Road for misdemeanor first-offense driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol and open container, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy reported.

According to the arrest report, a sheriff's deputy observed a white pickup truck traveling at 10 miles per hour (mph) over the posted speed limit, weaving in its travel lane, and crossing over into the white fog line multiple times. The vehicle was also observed to have crossed into the other travel lane.

A traffic stop was conducted at that point and contact made with the driver, whose eyes appeared red and watery. The smell of alcohol was emitting from the vehicle, the report said.

When asked if he had been drinking, the driver stated he had a couple of beers. He consented to standard field sobriety tests (SFSTs), which showed signs of impairment. The suspect refused to submit to a preliminary breath test (PBT), the report said, but the results of the SFSTs were enough to place him under arrest.

The suspect was handcuffed and taken into custody. An inventory of the suspect's vehicle recovered an alcohol container about half full, the report said. Bail: $1,588.

— A 27 year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday morning at 2:27 a.m. in the 1400 block of Rand Avenue for misdemeanor first-offense DUI alcohol, as well as DAS and parole-and-probation holds, a Carson City sheriff's deputy reported.

According to the arrest report, a sheriff's deputy observed a blue Dodge SUV traveling with a tail light out. The vehicle was also estimated to be speeding at about 15 mph above the posted speed limit.

A traffic stop was conducted and contact made with the driver, who displayed red, watery eyes and exhibited slurred speech. The smell of alcohol was emitting from the vehicle, the report said.

When asked if he had been drinking, the driver stated he had a couple of beers. He consented to SFSTs, which showed several clues of impairment, and a PBT, which yielded breath-alcohol content (BAC) of .129 percent, the report said.

A records check of the suspect showed he was under active supervision with Carson City DAS and Nevada Parole and Probation. Both agencies placed a hold on the suspect, who was taken into custody and transported to the Carson City Jail.

Violation of suspended sentence as added to his charges. Bail: $2,376.

— A 36 year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday morning at 1:40 a.m. in the area of N. Carson and Proctor streets on a felony state probation violation as well as a pair of misdemeanor bail condition violations, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy reported.

Justin Lee Bird was taken into custody and placed on a Nevada Parole and Probation hold after law enforcement made contact with him laying on the sidewalk outside of a business and throwing up, the arrest report said.

Bird appeared highly intoxicated, displayed red, watery eyes and exhibited slurred speech during law enforcement contact. A records check through Carson City Dispatch confirmed Bird was on probation with the state as well as Carson City DAS. Conditions included a 9 p.m. curfew and no alcohol, the report said.

Bird consented to a PBT, which yielded BAC of .208 percent. Both probation agencies were informed and requested Bird's arrested for violating conditions.

He was handcuffed and transported to the Carson City Jail for booking. Bail: $6,000.
