Wild Horse Children's Theater super in opening weekend of Mary Poppins, Jr.
The Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall entertained a packed house Saturday afternoon for the first matinee performance of "Mary Poppins, Jr.," a youthful retelling of the classic P.L. Travers tale.
Produced by the Wild Horse Children's Theater, "Mary Poppins, Jr." takes a kids-eye view of the Banks family and their introduction to a new nanny, the "practically perfect in every way" Mary Poppins.
Featuring two casts of youth ages 5-18, the musical is as much as a showcase of young local theater talent as it is classical entertainment.
The plays musical score features familiar songs such as "A Spoonful of Sugar," "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," "Jolly Holiday," "Let's Go Fly a Kite," "Step in Time," and "Chim Chim Cher-ee."
Saturday's opening performance featured Sarah Jongsma in the title role. Xander Borg starred as Bert, Jaedyn Thompson as Jane Banks, Phoenix Burke as Michael Banks, Quentin Powers as family patriarch George Banks, and Kieran Dazzo as matriarch Winifred Banks.
An encore performance is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday night at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 W. King Street in Carson City. Ethne Myler takes to the stage as Mary Poppins in tonight's evening performance.
There is one performance at 2 p.m. this Sunday. "Mary Poppins, Jr." runs through next weekend with showtimes on Friday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. as well as Saturday, Dec. 7, 2 and 7 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m.
Tickets cost $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and students, $5 for children under age 12, and children ages 3 and under are free. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Wild Horse Children's Theater box office at 775-440-1170 or online at www.wildhorsetheater.com.
Wild Horse Children’s Theater is a national award-winning theater company celebrating its 11th year bringing the magic of live theater to audiences in Carson City. The cast includes young actors, ages 5-18. Many are experienced actors who have been in the program since they were in first grade, as well as students who have never performed on stage before.
