Carson City disc golf complex to open this spring
A 9-hole beginner friendly short course and a full 18-hole championship course with plenty of challenging obstacles will be ready to play ahead of summer, said Carson City Parks and Recreation Senior Park Planner Vern Krahn. Eventually, a second championship course will be added totaling 45-holes across three courses.
Construction of a 50-space parking lot, facilities, and a shaded picnic area will be underway soon, according to Gregg Swift of the Eagle Valley Disc Golf Association. The course will be free for the public to use and there will be an agreement between the city and the EVDGA to manage upkeep and maintenance of the facility.
The courses will be located on 100-acres of county land just off of Flint Road on Rifle Range Road.
Building the course with minimal impact to local vegetation and wildlife without sacrificing the quality of play has been a top priority. By following the contour of terrain, erosion can be minimized by avoiding steep or descending trails between holes. This also creates an accessible and easily walkable course for players, according to Michael Plansky, one of EVDGA members helping to design the course.
Lyndsey Boyer, Senior Natural Resource Specialist for Parks and Recreation is photographing and documenting the area to create an environmental baseline that will be used to measure environmental impact over future years of use.
“The plants, the wildlife — all of that is here and that's why it is such an attractive site," said Krahn. “We want to make sure that 10 years from now that same character and that same experience is maintained.”
After applying in February, the course planners have been awarded a water and land conservation fund grant, and are also excepting donations and sponsorship. Each hole can be sponsored for a $1,000 donation. Sponsors will receive a permanent dedication plaque placed at the tee pad, and one year of free advertising space on the sign associated with that hole.
View the PDF below for more details about sponsoring a hole, or email Gregg Swift at GSwifty1@gmail.com. Educational plaques will be placed along the course highlighting historical facts, as well as information about the geography and local plants and wildlife in the immediate area.
