Valley rain and Sierra snow by late weekend, timing of second system uncertain
Thanksgiving Day and Friday will be sunny and dry with two storm systems moving into the region late this weekend and possibly through early next week, according to the National Weather Service. The storms are expected to bring rain into Carson City and snow to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra.
Forecaster confidence is medium to high that wet weather is on the way for the weekend and into early next week, but there are uncertainties as to when the systems will arrive. The first system, a weak one, will come through in two pieces and brush through the Sierra and northwest California Saturday into Sunday, according to the weather service.
Forecast models are continuing to trend slower with the second, wetter system and the latest timing is now late Monday through Wednesday, instead of Sunday night into Monday as previously forecast.
Both systems have the potential to cause slick conditions and travel impacts, especially in the Sierra. It is likely the details of these storms will change over the upcoming days, so check back for the latest updates.
If you have plans to travel back across the Sierra at the end of the holiday weekend or early next week be sure to check the latest forecast at weather.gov/Reno and check road conditions with Caltrans and NDOT.
