Snow possible in Carson City area by Wednesday
A strong cold front is expected to move into Northwestern Nevada Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno reports, bringing with it gusty southwest winds in the 30-40 mile per hour (MPH) range and precipitation in the form of rain possibly turning to snow as temperatures drop.
The NWS reports a fast-moving upper level low pressure system will approach the region Tuesday from the southwest. Winds in Carson City are expected to pick up in the afternoon with peak gusts up to 50 mph just ahead of the front.
There is a 30 percent chance of rain and/or snow Tuesday night, increasing to 50 percent by Wednesday morning. Snow is expected in the higher elevations late Tuesday, but may reach the valleys as temperatures drop early Wednesday. Overnight lows in Carson City are forecast to be in the thirties, possibly near or below freezing Wednesday morning. Wednesday’s forecasted high is expected to reach only into the forties.
Light snow accumulations are expected mainly for the Lake Tahoe Basin and points north, the NWS reports. Snow showers Wednesday are forecasted mostly for the region north of Highway 50. Accumulations of a half-inch or less are forecast.
Travel is expected to be impacted throughout the region with slippery roads and low visibility in areas receiving snow showers. Travelers should plan ahead and prepare for winter driving conditions over the Sierra Nevada.
Weather for Sunday into Tuesday, though, remains mild and temperate with sunshine just ahead of the low pressure front with highs in the upper sixties and lows around 40 degrees.
Next week’s cold front is forecast to leave the area by Thursday, which will see highs in the mid forties before they start to gradually climb again into the mid to upper fifties with partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies by next weekend.
