Sierra Lutheran Cross Country places 2nd in state, produces two state champions
CARSON CITY — Saturday, Nov. 3 was the State Cross Country Meet in Boulder City, Nevada at Veteran's Memorial Park. Sierra Lutheran had a successful day. The 1A/2A girls race was the first race of the day.
Emily McNeely ran her race according to plan, which was to break away from the North Tahoe girls pack to take the lead after the one mile mark. She won the title of State Champion with a time of 20:48. "It was a nice way to close out my high school cross country career," said Emily McNeely. Her teammate Taylor Davison came in 9th with a time of 23:51.
The boys team raced later in the day. Jared Marchegger took control of the race from the beginning, followed closely by his teammate, Teagan Hansen. Jared Marchegger won the State Championship with a time of 16:51. "I have a sense of accomplishment to have 3 State Championships, but the bigger accomplishment was winning 2nd as a team," commented Jared Marchegger.
Teagan Hansen came in 2nd with a time of 17:28; Andreas Gilson came in 21st with a time of 19:23; Aaron Waite came in 37th with a time of 21:04; Jacob Tack was 40th with a time of 21:25 and William Webster came in 45th with a time of 23:20. Coach Kubel commented, "Jared's three consecutive State Champion performance is admirable. Jared and Teagan were pretty much a given in the race. Our final four runners knew that the race would be tight. Silver Stage beat us by 3 points at Regionals and there were two teams in the south to contend with."
Sierra Lutheran beat the 3rd place team by one point to win 2nd place as a team.
Sierra Lutheran boys team also brought home the 1A/2A Academic Award with a grade point average of 3.88.
"These boys have worked hard in so many ways. It is exciting to receive the recognition for not only running but also for their academic work at school. I am so proud of them," said Coach Williams.
