Carson City area weather: Brisk cool down ahead through much of the week
As the last Nevada Day event on Saturday was winding down, the pleasantly warm weather the Carson City region has been experiencing for several days seems to have gone the way of the setting sun.
While sunshine remains in the fold Sunday and through much of the week, daytime high temperatures will be around 20 to 25 degrees cooler than what the region has, for days, been experiencing, according to the National Weather Service.
Gusty east winds will be in place today mainly for the Tahoe Basin and upper slopes of the Sierra. Hazardous boating conditions can be expected on Lake Tahoe with gusts upwards of 40 mph and wave heights up to 3-4 feet possible, particularly on the west shores.
Wind gusts across exposed ridge-tops right along the Sierra crest may see gusts of 70-100 mph. Ridgetop winds across Mono County will lull this afternoon with peak gusts expected this evening.
Most locations are running about 5-15 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago, with areas north of about Pyramid Lake running 20-25 degrees colder. This cold air will continue to filter in through the day today which will make for a stark contrast from our weather yesterday. Highs Sunday will be about 20-30 degrees colder than Saturday with highs in the 40s for most valleys.
Temperatures will stay well below average until around the beginning of the weekend then are expected to rebound toward average late next week, however, at this time, rain and snow isn't expected for the next two weeks, according to the weather service.
Meanwhile, light winds and a dry air mass will settle into the area on Monday. This will allow for some frigid temperatures by Monday morning with teens possible for western Nevada valleys and single digits for colder Sierra valleys.
High temperatures will rebound a bit on Monday afternoon with highs in the 50s across western Nevada and Sierra valleys. However, another weaker cold front will drop highs back into the 40s on Tuesday along with another round of brisk northeast winds.
In the longer term, cold air settles into the region in the wake of low pressure area, Highs Wednesday afternoon could be some 15-20 degrees below normal while lows Thursday morning could be 10-15 degrees below normal.
Low level inversions are likely each morning through the extended forecast but their strength will begin to moderate by Friday and Saturday morning as the overall air mass begins to warm.
