Carson City arrests: Searches lead to meth, marijuana, gun and ammunition

Two men and a woman were arrested Thursday night at two locations on felony drug and related charges, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Margaret Genevieve Schmitt, 51, was arrested for suspicion of felony drug trafficking (4 to 14 grams), possession of a firearm by an ex-felon, maintaining a drug house and possession of a controlled substance over an ounce. She also faces a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Daniel David Johnson, 55, faces felony charges of maintaining a drug house and being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm. He also faces misdemeanor charges of drug paraphernalia, not using a turn signal and driving without a seatbelt.

Also arrested was Anthony Manuel Fernand, 28, for felony suspicion of possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the arrest report, a deputy on patrol observed the driver of a vehicle not wearing a seat belt and make multiple lane changes without signaling in front of other vehicles on Saliman Road.

Two were inside the vehicle at the time of the traffic stop. The deputy conducted a records check and learned Johnson was a convicted felony for drug trafficking and had a lengthy criminal history for drug related offenses, the arrest report states.

A canine did an exterior sniff of the vehicle and alerted positive. The deputy asked Johnson, the driver if there were drugs in the vehicle. He said no, the arrest report states. A search was conducted. Deputies found 1.1 grams of methamphetamine, a drug spoon, and several boxes of ammunition for a 7.62 firearm, and a 5.56 firearm, the arrest report states.

During the search Johnson told the deputy: “That’s just ammo. I don’t have guns in there,” the arrest report states. “My guns are at home.”

The deputy informed him of his Miranda rights and he stated he understood. He was asked about the firearms. He said they were at home in his RV with his girlfriend in the 1900 block of Pinion Hills Drive. The man then asked for a lawyer and the interview was terminated.

Deputies interviewed the passenger and read him his rights. Because the drug paraphernalia was found under the passenger seat and both the driver and passenger had dominion and control of the methamphetamine in the center console, both men were arrested.

Meanwhile, with the information Johnson provided regarding his firearms and the location, the deputy applied for a search warrant of the RV on Pinion Hills Drive. The search warrant was approved by a Carson City judge at 10:30 p.m.

The RV was surrounded and suspect, Margaret Schmitt, exited the residence and was detained. The RV was searched where deputies located a Makarov 9x18mm semi-automatic handgun, holster, magazine and box of ammunition in a duffel bag, two methamphetamine pipes with residue on a mini-fridge and a meth pipe on a table, 45 grams of marijuana in a gallon ziplock bag, and .2 grams of methamphetamine in a paper bindle.

Suspecting more drugs or firearms in a vehicle that belonged to Schmitt, deputies called the judge and asked for an amended search warrant to include the vehicle. The search warrant was approved at 12:09 a.m. Inside, deputies found 6.5 grams of methamphetamine, more ammunition, and miscellaneous firearm parts. Bail for Schmitt: $63,637. Bail for Johnson: $43,634. Bail for Fernand: $3,637.

In other arrests:
— Two men Hayden Lewis Winebarger of Dayton and Randal Steven Selby, a transient, were arrested Thursday in the 400 block of East College Parkway for felony possession of a controlled substance and other charges, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Winebarger, 19, also faces misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, and hit and run of an unoccupied vehicle. Selby, 39, also faces misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and petit larceny.

According to the arrest report, a deputy responded to Walmart for a report of a larceny. Dispatch advised Selby had stolen auxiliary cords from the store and was running from loss prevention. The deputy was also advised Selby got into a black Scion and was attempting to leave the area. The Scion crashed into a vehicle as it was leaving the area, the arrest report states.

A deputy located the Scion and conducted a traffic stop while other deputies met with Walmart loss prevention and the victim of the vehicle hit and run.

Both men were detained and advised of their Miranda rights. Winebarger, 19, was the driver, and Selby was the passenger. A canine conducted an exterior sniff of the car and the dog alerted to the presence of drugs. Deputies did a search and found 2 grams of marijuana in the center console, a marijuana pipe in the driver’s side door panel and a scale with methamphetamine residue on it. Bail for Winebarger: $5,011. Bail for Selby: $3,989.

— A 46-year-old Carson City man and an inmate at Carson City jail, Fred Anthony Setzco, was arrested Thursday, 4 p.m. for felony possession of marijuana inside the jail and misdemeanor obstructing a police officer.

According to the arrest report, deputies received information the suspect was smoking marijuana in his cell. Deputies made contact with the man where he was put in hand restraints and escorted to a stall for a body search.

The man removed his clothing where officers observed something on his person. The suspect began to resist. The suspect then turned around and put what turned out to be a rubber glove and plastic into his mouth. He was ordered to spit it out. The glove and plastic baggie contained marijuana and a small glass to smoke marijuana. Bail: $5,637.

— A 27-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Friday, 9:50 a.m. in the 3400 block of Imperial Way for two misdemeanor contempt of court warrants issued Aug. 28, 2017 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $2,000.
