Out of 14,500 entries: NDOT announces winners of 'Welcome to Nevada' roadside sign raffle
The Nevada Department of Transportation has announced four winners who will receive a “Welcome to Nevada” sign as the old, obsolete highway signs are redesigned and replaced. The following winners were randomly selected from each region of the state and personally notified:
Southwest: Anna Thomas, Minden
Northwest: Jennifer Bills, Reno
Northeast: Kaitlyn Tueller, Spring Creek
Southeast: Breanna Kirkham, North Las Vegas
The welcome signs, including iconic signs depicting a lone prospector, have stood at many interstate and freeway entrances into Nevada for approximately 25 years. The signs are being replaced by new welcome signs designed by Nevada high school graphic artists through a contest organized by the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs in partnership with the Nevada Department of Education and NDOT.
“The existing signs are a source of state pride and identity for many Nevadans,” NDOT Communications Director Sean Sever explained. “We thought there was no better holiday than just before the Nevada Day holiday to announce our sign winners and share the signs with fellow Nevadans.”
Nearly 14,500 Nevada residents entered the free raffle via phone, web site and social media, with winners selected randomly. Winners must present valid ID when picking up the signs and be willing to sign a waiver regarding lawful usage of the signage.
The existing signs will be given to winners and replaced with new signs in the coming months.
