Carson City man jailed for alleged burglary, stolen property possession at storage business

A 28-year-old man was arrested Wednesday for suspicion of felony burglary, possession of stolen property and drug possession among other offenses, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Kasey Dawson of Carson City was taken into custody at around 7 p.m. following an investigation by sheriff's office detectives and the CCSO Special Enforcement Team. He was also booked for suspicion of possession of heroin, methamphetamine, misdemeanor drug paraphernalia and a contempt of court warrant.

According to the booking report, CCSO was investigating a burglary at a Fairview Drive storage unit facility where Dawson is alleged to have used a gate code that matched the same gate code that suspects used from a burglary that happened the previous night.

A criminal check on Dawson showed he had a confirmed misdemeanor warrant out of Carson City. CCSO searched the man and his backpack and located several drug paraphernalia items and narcotics including suspected methamphetamine and heroin, according to the report.

The investigation proceeded, where it was learned the suspect had a role in the burglary where he allegedly helped two other males gain access to a store unit.

The suspect advised the other suspects gave him a generator from the storage unit that they gained access. He had messages on his cell phone of attempting to sell the generator, the arrest report states.

During the investigation, surveillance footage showed a pickup parking in front of the store unit and a male who is seen grinding the lock off the storage unit. The male is joined by two other males and the three can be seen moving items from the storage unit into the back of the pickup, the report states.

CCSO detectives were informed by the business that the storage unit in question was being auctioned off because the renter was behind on rent and, after several notices to make payment, a lien was obtained against the storage unit and its contents listed for sale at an online auction.

Staff informed CCSO that they had taken pictures of what was in the storage unit when they cut off the lock and replaced it with a red tubular lock. In the pictures there were several firearms visible from the front, including a Glock pistol and a Ruger revolver. There were three gun safes covered in firearms manufacturer stickers, a dirt bike and two motorcycles, the arrest report states.

CCSO investigators took pictures of the storage unit and saw a piece of the red lock on the ground that had been cut from the storage unit. There were also three pieces of latex gloves on the ground in front of the storage unit and a new lock had been used to secure the unit. Staff cut the lock from the storage unit to see what had been taken. The gun safes, two handguns, generator and dirt bike were all missing, the report states.

CCSO learned one of the key codes belonging to a unit had been used numerous times in the past 24 hours. Many access attempts were denied because the storage facility locks all gates at 10 p.m. and unlocks all gates at 6 a.m.

While attempting to obtain footage of the vehicle used at the time of the burglary, staff informed CCSO that the gate code was being entered at the main gain next to the office. CCSO investigators observed Dawson with a black backpack matching the general build of one of the suspects shown in the surveillance footage. He then walked past the office and turned east on Fairview Drive.

CCSO made contact with Dawson who said a friend provided him with the pass code allowing him to enter the storage unit facility. While there earlier, he said he was helping a friend arrange their storage unit. He said two men drove up in a pickup, asked for a lighter to smoke and offered him money for some help, the report states.

Dawson said he joined the men in front of the storage unit in question and cut off the lock. He said he believed one of the men had fallen behind on their payments and was attempting to break into a unit to retrieve the contents because they were about to be auctioned. Dawson said that he knows this because he saw it on the TV show "Storage Wars," the report states.

He said that once the unit was open he helped the men load three large upright cabinets with stickers on them, a generator and a dirt bike. He added that the upright metal cabinet that he helped move was very heavy, the report states.

One of the men gave him a $100 bill for helping. He said the man claimed ownership of the dirt bike and rode away. Dawson said the other man drove away in the pickup loaded with items in the back of the truck, the report states.

Dawson gave permission for CCSO deputies to search through his cell phone in which there were messages about selling a generator. He was arrested for suspicion of burglary and possession of stolen property as well as the drug and warrant offenses. Bail: $25,000.

— A 38-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Thursday for suspicion of misdemeanor DUI, driving on a suspended driver's license and failure to maintain a lane.

According to the booking report, at 4:03 a.m. a deputy observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on East William Street. The deputy followed the vehicle where it made an illegal u-turn in the intersection of East William and North Roop Street. The vehicle went eastbound at a high rate of speeding. The deputy, who turned on their overhead lights for a traffic stop, observed the vehicle failed to maintain a lane and nearly hit a center median. The vehicle stopped at a parking lot.

The officer observed an adult male exit the vehicle and appeared to be unsteady on his feet, nearly falling face forward on the asphalt. The officer approached the man and immediately smelled an odor of alcohol coming from his person. The officer asked the man if he consumed any alcohol. The man stated he had a "couple of shots," the report states.

The man provided his driver's license and became uncooperative by attempting to walk away. He was detained. He agreed to standardized field sobriety tests and the handcuffs were removed to conduct the tests. The man showed clues of impairment on the tests and stated he would not consent to a preliminary breath test.

He was arrested for suspicion of DUI. The deputyy contacted dispatch and requested to speak with the on-call district attorney and on-call judge for a search warrant for a blood draw. The warrant was granted and a blood draw was taken. Total bail amount: $1,724.

While some may believe that Nevada’s state motto may be Battle Born, this is a common misconception. Battle Born is a saying that came from the fact that the statehood of Nevada was ratified at the end of the Civil War, which gave President Abraham Lincoln the votes he needed to free slaves in the doomed confederacy and across the nation.

The true motto of Nevada is “All for Our Country,” which, interestingly, was born out of the same circumstances as the more often used Battle Born.
