Auto body repair scam warning issued in Carson City area
The Carson City Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a scam involving a mobile auto body repairman who is asking for money to do on-the-spot vehicle repairs.
At least two residents have been taken in the scam, according to the sheriff's office, with one being followed to the bank for payment of service.
In both instances the victims were approached in parking lots at Save Mart and Lowe's and told by the suspect that he specializes in auto body repairs and that he can take out dents and repair paint scratches using a rubbing compound. He quoted the victims prices and they agreed and paid him.
He told the victims to wait 12 to 24 hours before washing off the compound after he applied it on the vehicle dents and scratches. The compound in question, however, stripped the paint off the vehicles, the victims told the sheriff's office.
The identity of the suspect is not known but Carson City sheriff's patrol officers have been advised. The man is described as 5 foot 9 inches, heavy set, with dark short hair, 50 to 60 years old. A woman is with him described at 5 foot 4 inches, and walks with a limp. The couple have two dogs with them.
He drives a white Ford SUV with Texas license plates and Lee's Mobile Auto Body on the side doors. According to the city's business license division, no one by the name of Lee's Mobile Auto Body has applied for or has received a license.
If you've seen the White Ford SUV with Texas plates, contact the Carson City Sheriff's Office non-emergency number at (775) 887-2011 to report the vehicle.
