Douglas authorities: Gardnerville man suspected of killing his mother dies
The 27-year-old man suspected of killing his mother during a domestic dispute early Tuesday morning at a Gardnerville home died of respiratory failure Friday night, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
Jarek Kozlowski, the suspect in the shooting death of his 50-year-old mother, Michelle Kozlowski, died at 7:40 p.m. on Friday at the hospital as a result of respiratory failure and, not as a result of injuries sustained in the shooting incident, said Douglas County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Pat Brooks.
The domestic dispute happened at a Manhattan Way home. Jarek had allegedly produced a handgun and made threats to his mother. Jarek’s younger brother, Joseph Kozlowski, attempted to calm Jarek down and had him go outside.
While outside Jarek put the handgun down at which time Joseph and Jarek became involved in a physical domestic fight, said Douglas County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Pat Brooks. During this fight, Jarek grabbed the gun and began aiming it at Joseph who ran away from the residence. Michelle then confronted Jarek, at which time he shot and killed her, authorities said.
When deputies arrived, Jarek confronted the deputies at the door of the residence by firing rounds at the deputies. Deputies returned fire striking Jarek. No deputies were injured.
Jarek then ran from the residence over the back fence. Deputies located Jarek who had serious injuries when they took him into custody where he was then taken to the hospital.
