Two names to be added to Nevada firefighters’ memorial at Carson City's Mills Park
Plaques bearing the names of two Las Vegas area firefighters who died last year in the line of duty will be added at the Nevada Firefighters' Memorial in Carson City on Oct. 14.
Firefighters to be honored at this year’s ceremony at Mills Park include Capt. Yaphet K. Miller of the North Las Vegas Fire Department and Anthony C. Stephens, of Las Vegas Fire and Rescue. Firefighters to be recognized for Distinguished Service include Richard M. Riolo and Rusty McAllister.
Capt. Miller, 43, a 22-year veteran of the North Las Vegas Fire Department, died on Oct. 5, 2016 following a Sept. 22 fire. Anthony Curtis Stephens, 58, of Las Vegas died from cancer on Nov. 29, 2016.
In his 25 years with Las Vegas Fire and Rescue, Stephens served as a firefighter, paramedic and fire investigator. In the state of Nevada, firefighters who die because of cancer, a leading cause of death among firefighters, is considered a line of duty death.
The community is encouraged to attend and honor the memory of these men, and to reassure their loved ones that they will not be forgotten.
The formal ceremony will be held at the Nevada Firefighters’ Memorial in Mills Park at 10 a.m. The ceremony will conclude the weeklong observance of National Fire Prevention Week in Nevada.
Honor Guard members will lead a combined fire service, honor guard during the ceremony and will ring the memorial bell.
