Carson City authorities take aim at thieves with pawn shop crackdown
Carson City businesses who deal in pawn and trade were given an update Thursday on revised laws by the Carson City Sheriff's Office. The update is designed to stop the sale of stolen property to pawn shops by thugs, drug addicts and dealers.
The statute reads: Pursuant to NRS 646.060 a Pawn Broker or, NRS 647.140 a second hand dealer, must not receive property from anyone under the age of 18, common drunkard, habitual known criminals, their associates and or their agents.
About a year of research went into the initiative and statute, which is designed with the intent to protect the community, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, who was briefed on this initiative, created by Detective Bob Motamenpour, as he was delivering the notices.
Notably, it was pointed out that stolen property is often taken to area pawn shops by known criminals in exchange for money to support criminal activities, including money used to support drug habits.
Recognizing this, businesses are in the best position to place barriers or obstacles in front of the crooks, Furlong said. Once a stolen item is located in a pawn shop, the item is seized or placed on hold pending a criminal investigation. These results in dollars lost to the businesses.
Captain Ken Sandage of the Sheriff's Office Investigations Division identified the Carson City SuperPawn store as one of the most alert and attentive in the community, according to the press statement.
Their corporate offices and local management recognize this type of threat and have active policies and practices in place to prevent stolen properties from coming into their possession, the statement read.
In doing so, the business is not only protecting them self, but are leaders in the community crime prevention efforts. Working closely with the Sheriff's Office, they enhance their business dollar line, during an economic time when every dollar counts, the statement concluded.
The Sheriff's Office has committed to the businesses regular alerting updates to share information. For more information, contact the Carson City Sheriff's Office at (775) 887-2500.
