Silver Springs man identified in fatal Lyon County crash on US-50A
A Silver Springs man has been identified in a fatal crash that happened last month on US-50A in Lyon County, according to Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol.
Howard Ackerson, 94, from Silver Springs, died from injuries in the August 26, 2024 crash on US-50A and 6th Street, according to a NHP news release.
At approximately 11:05 a.m., the Nevada State Police Highway Patrol responded to the crash. The preliminary investigation indicates that a red 2023 Mazda CX-5 was traveling westbound on US-50A.
For reasons unconfirmed at this time, the driver of the Mazda departed the travel lane off the roadway right and traveled adjacent to US-50A, then input steering to re-enter the roadway, failed to maintain the westbound travel lanes and struck an eastbound red 2004 Dodge Neon, according to the release.
The driver of the red 2004 Dodge Neon, Howard Ackerson, was transported to an area hospital where he succumbed to injuries and died.
The driver of the 2023 Mazda CX-5 was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Nevada State Police Highway Patrol Northern Command West Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating this crash.
The Nevada Highway Patrol Northern Command West has investigated 21 fatal crashes in Northern Nevada resulting in 24 fatalities in 2024. Spokeswoman Kim Yoko Smith said the number reflects those investigated by highway patrol in the Reno, northern Nevada area.
