Carson City arrests: Man jailed for allegedly making large purchases with stolen credit cards
A 49-year-old man was arrested for suspicion of multiple felony counts burglary and other charges, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.
John Collins, listed as a transient, was taken into custody early Thursday morning in the area of Carson and Robinson streets. According to the arrest report, deputies were notified by a sheriff's sergeant that there was probable cause to arrest the subject for suspicion of burglary.
A deputy located the man walking near the intersection of North Carson Street and detained him. A deputy who was familiar with, and investigating the burglary case, was contacted and advised Collins had been detained. Collins was arrested on a probable cause for four counts of burglary.
According to the arrest report, Wednesday, a deputy assigned to the patrol division was dispatched to a report of a vehicle burglary and met with the reporting victim who stated when he woke up in the morning he observed the dome light of his vehicle was on. Fearing that the battery would be dead, he started the vehicle, and went inside his residence. When he went to get coffee later that morning he could not located his wallet that he said he had left the evening prior in the center console.
Later at work he logged into his bank account and noticed fraudulent transactions on his bank account. He stated he contacted his bank and requested all credit and debit cards be turned off.
Transactions were made at Walmart on Highway 395, with a Visa Debit Card, for $1,887.81; $950 with another Visa Card and $913.53 at Lowes in Carson City, the arrest report states.
A subsequent investigation led to the stores where merchandise was purchased. Video tape showed a male, later identified as Collins, making a purchase at Lowe's using a credit card. The man placed the item into the trunk of a taxi, where he and an unidentified female then went to Walmart. The two went inside and came back with bags of merchandise, according to the arrest report.
A cab driver took them to the stores and then to a parking lot of a south Carson Street casino where the suspect attempted to pay the fare with credit cards, which were rejected. The female companion with the suspect suggested they go to a pawn shop to get cash so they could pay for the fare, according to the arrest report.
Deputies located the vehicle associated with the couple, which was described as a gray four door filled with trash and debris, as though subjects were living in the vehicle. Deputies checked with casino security who advised the couple had been trespassed from the casino.
With photos and identities of the suspects obtained during the investigation, deputies briefed incoming shift about the case and to arrest Collins if located on probable cause. The woman with Collins, nor her identity, was included in the arrest report.
At jail, deputies searched the wallet of Collins and located a receipt for $913.53 from Lowe's with a Visa card. There was also a receipt from a pawnshop for a laptop pawned Wednesday for $174.
Deputies conducted a search of Collins at the time of the arrest and discovered a scale in a backpack, with methamphetamine.
He faces four felony burglary charges, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Total bail amount listed: $83,637.
