Fire at south shore Lake Tahoe NV Energy power station causes widespread outages
A fire at an NV Energy south shore Lake Tahoe power plant knocked out electricity to thousands Monday morning from Tahoe to Carson Valley, and a small portion of Carson City.
As of 9:30 a.m. more than 5,500 NV Energy customers were without power in Douglas County from Stateline to north of Glenbrook in 5 outages. At 9:08 a.m. 20 NV Energy customers in Carson City were without power near South Terrace Street. In Carson Valley, outages have been reported off of Foothill Road and Centerville Lane.
Thousands more are without power in South Lake Tahoe and Markleeville areas, according to Tahoe Douglas Fire which notes there was a mechanical failure in the system that caused a fire. That fire is contained.
"No estimated restoration time yet but customers are advised to prepare for extended outage," said Kathy Carter of Liberty Utilities, which provides South Lake Tahoe and Markleeville on the California side with power.
Earlier this morning, crews were called to structure fire at the NV Energy station off Highway 50 in Zephyr Cove.
