Nevada State GIS Conference returns for 29th year Oct. 11-12
Calling all mapping and GIS professionals and enthusiasts! The 29th Nevada State GIS Conference will take place October 11–12, 2023 in Reno, Nevada.
Hosted by the Nevada Geographic Information Society (NGIS), they are pleased to announce the venue for the 2023 conference as the Reno-Sparks Convention Center with beautiful views of southwest Reno, Mount Rose, and the Carson Range while attendees pass between conference sessions.
Attendees will have a chance to participate in pre-conference and social activities in beautiful Lake Tahoe.
This event is an excellent professional development opportunity for GIS analysts, developers, cartographers, geographers, students, educators, and anyone working with maps or interested in learning more about geographic information systems (GIS).
Participants are invited to share how they are using GIS in their work, network with other professionals, display maps or posters about their GIS projects, gain some technical training, and interact with leading GIS companies that will be on site exhibiting and presenting.
In addition, individuals giving an oral or poster presentation or even simply attending the sessions have the opportunity for their participation to count toward a GIS Professional (GISP) certification or re-certification. There is even a chance to earn some bragging rights with a contest for poster presentations.
"We are so excited to bring the NGIS Conference back to Northern Nevada after a five-year break. We continue our mission of promoting professionalism, cooperation, mutual assistance and sharing of knowledge and experience related to the advancement of geographic information systems and spatial data technologies in Nevada," Matthew Lawton, president of NGIS, said.
The conference is a great opportunity for GIS students or recent graduates as well to showcase their GIS skills, network with potential employers, and make some critical contacts with industry, researchers, government agencies, and non-profits who all are doing interesting work with GIS. A student category for the poster competition is also available, and GIS students are strongly encouraged to participate. Additionally, students receive a significantly reduced registration rate.
Proposals to present or submit a poster are still being accepted and can be submitted through the organization’s website, https://www.ngis.org.
The “early bird” reduced registration rate ends on September 1st, so register now to secure the discounted rate.
Active dues-paying members of NGIS receive a discount on their registration rate. Non-NGIS members will receive a one-year membership along with their early bird registration. Registration details can be found on the website.
A special block lodging rate at the Atlantis Casino Resort and Spa has also been secured for attendees registered for the conference who will be traveling from out of town. The Atlantis is conveniently connected by skywalk to the Convention Center. The special lodging rate ends September 10th, and a limited number of rooms at the special rate are available. Registrants are encouraged to reserve soon if a room is required.
In addition to individual presentations, NGIS is excited to announce the keynote speaker, Michael Mears, Eureka County Assessor, volunteer firefighter, and search and rescue volunteer. He is a past president of the Nevada Assessors Association.
Conference sessions will consist of excellent talks and demonstrations that pertain to public safety, conservation and resource management, public health, biological sciences, research studies, asset management, State/Local government applications of GIS, software tips and tricks, and more.
Anyone interested in learning more about this conference or NGIS in general can either sign up at the “Join NGIS” link on the website or sign up for the free mailing list under the “Stay Connected” option.
