Nevada Highway Patrol reports fatal crash on Highway 50 near Dayton

The Nevada Highway Patrol is reporting a fatal crash that happened at around 5 p.m. Wednesday night on Highway 50 and Occidental Drive east of Dayton. There are two vehicles involved with two confirmed driver fatalities, according to NHP.

The eastbound lane of Highway 50 is closed near Occidental because of the crash. NHP says motorists can expect lengthy travel delays near the area of the crash and that they should find alternate routes.

There were only the drivers in the vehicles that crashed, said NHP spokesperson Hannah DeGoey. The cause is under investigation. We will update as more information becomes available.

CARSON CITY — For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded, Carson Tahoe Health’s Cancer Center hosted an event to honor and celebrate cancer survivors. Sunday, June 5 marked a day full of activities, drawing community together in support of the 35th annual National Cancer Survivors Day, recognized the first Sunday of each June.

Carson City Library takes summer reading underwater with the “Oceans of Possibilities” summer reading challenge, starting Saturday, June 11 through Aug. 6, 2022.

As the library transforms into an underwater reading haven with coral reefs, Orca and blue whales and manta rays swimming overhead, library officials challenge the community to read a cumulative total of 400,000 minutes throughout the challenge weeks.

Keeping our community safe is a full time job for the dedicated team at Carson City Sheriff’s Office. Although many think law enforcement is funded by speeding tickets or other traffic infractions, that is actually a very common misconception. A large majority of the revenue brought in from fines redirects back into the city, including road repairs and education.

During the past two years, many of the 12,000 children and adolescents living in Carson City have simply been spending their vacations at home due to the pandemic and the associated insecurities of school or daycare closures.

This year, however, many families hoping to return to “normal” with summer camps and youth programming found many programs have been capped or even canceled due to a lack of staffing.

Those with digital over-the-air channels associated with KOLO Channel 8 have begun to see some service restored following outages that happened over the weekend. KOLO noted on its website that its 8.1 signal has been restored and it is working on restoring its remaining digital channels.

Today, Wednesday, Carson's Bee City invites members of the public and the Carson City Chamber of Commerce to a “What’s the Buzz Carson City” event at Foothill Garden from 4:30 to 6 p.m. The garden trail is located at 1535 Medical Parkway behind the Cancer Center.

To raise awareness on Elder Abuse and what we can do to see, prevent, and report elder abuse, RSVP will be hosting an Elder Abuse Awareness Open House on Wednesday June 15, 2022.

On Tuesday afternoon, three Nevada Department of Transportation survey employees were struck and injured by a passing motorist on U.S. 395 near Topsy Lane while conducting road survey work for a future highway resurfacing project.

UPDATE 2:41PM: The two injured Nevada Department of Transportation employees who were struck by a pickup Tuesday afternoon on US-395 north of Topsy Lane were part of a surveying crew and were not in the roadway at the time of the crash, according to Nevada State Police. Their conditions are unknown at this time. The highway is open. Impairment is not suspected at this time, said Trooper Charles Caster.

Douglas County and Carson City emergency crews responded Tuesday afternoon to Topsy Lane and Highway 395 for a vehicle crash that involved two NDOT employees who were reportedly struck by a vehicle.

On June 1, the Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department announced they would be closing the Waterfall trail to dogs effective immediately.

Nevada Health Centers’ School-based Health Center, located at 618 W. Musser Street in Carson City, will offer COVID-19 and flu vaccinations to adults and children during a walk-in clinic Wednesday, June 8, from 9 to 11 a.m.

A 41-year-old man was arrested Sunday morning for suspicion of felony possession of a stolen vehicle, gross misdemeanor intimidating a peace officer, and eight lesser offenses, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

UPDATE 4PM: The brush fire in a field off of North Carson Street near Medical Parkway and I-580 has been knocked down and is in mop up phase. No structures were damaged however a fence was burned. The fire is estimated to be around 1/3 of an acre, said Carson City Fire Department Battalion Chief Micah Horton. The cause is under investigation.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Sunday afternoon to a brush fire in the 4500 block of North Carson Street near the I-580 freeway.

The first noticeably happy people to attract my undivided attention were San Diego roller-bladers, skating down the boardwalk with music in their ears. This was 40 years ago or so, and these dancing athletes were clearly happy to the core. It made me smile and even laugh in the wake of their sheer joy.
