Carson City jail inmate gives up screws, washer for a sandwich after cracking cell window
A 47-year-old Carson City Detention Center inmate was booked Thursday for gross misdemeanor damage to jail property after throwing screws and a washer at a window causing it to crack, a sheriff’s deputy said.
According to the arrest report, the man allegedly took out two metal screws from a light fixture and began throwing them at a cell window, cracking it. A deputy investigating the incident observed through a window the man picking up the objects and throwing them at the window.
The deputy put on a body camera to document the event and observed, through the window, a metal screw on the floor of the man’s cell, and observed a screw was missing from a light fixture located over the toilet.
Communicating through the food pass, the inmate then began to threaten jail deputy with physical violence and raised his hands to chest level indicating he wanted to fight him. The jail deputy instead offered the inmate a sandwich.
In doing so, the inmate threw two metal screws under the cell door for the deputy to retrieve, along with a metal washer. The jail deputy attempted to get the man to put on wrist restraints so he could be moved to another cell.
The man then put his jail issued mattress against the door covering the food pass entry. The deputy notes this is common among inmates who wish to avoid being pepper sprayed. Jail deputies opened the door and a taser was pointed at the man because of his threats to fight. The inmate followed the commands of the jail deputy and was transferred to another cell without further incident. Bail: $2,500.
