Carson City arrests: Two jailed after drugs found during traffic stop

Two Carson City men were arrested Wednesday for suspicion of drug possession and other charges following a traffic stop for suspended vehicle registration, a Carson City Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Team deputy said.

Arrested were Michael Lyman Richey, 59, for felony suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, misdemeanor driving on a revoked license, driving without insurance and driving with suspended registration. Joshua Paul Martin, 30, was booked for suspicion of felony possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the arrest report, a SET deputy was patrolling the area and at 4:09 p.m. checked the registration status on a pickup that returned as suspended. The deputy conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle, which was occupied by three men.

The driver, Richey, did not have any identification documents. Dispatch advised his license had been revoked indefinitely for failure to pay fines. Dispatch further advised the man had at least six failure to appear warrants issued for his arrest.

A canine did an exterior sniff of the pickup and alerted positive. The deputy informed Richey there was a positive alert on the pickup. The man replied there “have been a lot of people in my truck. I don’t known what is in there,” the arrest report states.

During a search a deputy located two prescription bottles in the center console, one bottle contained five white tablets of tramadol hydrochloride, a schedule 4 controlled substance. The driver said he knew about the pills in the truck but did not know how they got there. He was arrested. Inside the bed of the pickup was a backpack that Martin claimed ownership, the arrest report states.

Inside deputies found two glass pipes with methamphetamine residue. During a search of his person, a deputy found a small white plastic baggie in the left pant pocket that contained methamphetamine. He stated he did not know the baggie was in his pant pocket. Bail for Richey, $3,986 and bail for Martin, $3,637.
