Carson City Sheriff warns of possible mailer scam
The Carson City Sheriff's Office is warning recipients of a recent electronic refrigerator direct mailer for Carson City Proud that the communication may be a scam, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said Friday.
The Carson City Chamber of Commerce received the refrigerator e-mailer Thursday afternoon, Chamber President Ronni Hannaman said, and the message was reported to the sheriff's office Friday morning as suspicious.
Hannaman said there were multiple red flags in the e-mail leading her to believe the message was not legitimate.
For one thing, she said the name Carson City Proud did not match the well-known community web site, Carson Proud.
The advertising rates for the marketing campaign were also way too high, Hannaman said.
Sheriff Furlong said his office began investigating the suspicious mailer this morning. The telephone was noted to be out of service when sheriff's investigators attempted to make contact, he said.
The Carson City Sheriff's Office is continuing to treat the mailer as suspicious for a possible scam until an investigation is completed.
In the mean time, Furlong said anyone who has received this mailer is advised to treat it as suspicious and not respond.
