Motorcyclist killed, wife injured in Churchill County accident
A Battle Mountain man died on Sunday morning after he crashed his motorcycle in Eastern Churchill County, the Nevada High Patrol reports.
Michael A. Jurad, 66, died of his injuries. Jurad's wife, Mary L. Jurad, who was a passenger, was flown to Reno and is listed in serious condition this morning at Renown Regional Medical Center, NHP reports.
The accident was reported at 9:46 a.m. Sunday on State Route 722 near mile marker 15 in eastern Churchill County, a mile west of Carroll Summit.
According to NHP, the details learned so far indicate that a tan 2006 Harley-Davidson motorcycle was traveling eastbound on the two-lane highway where the posted speed limit is 35 miles per hour. The motorcycle operated by Jurad, and his wife as passenger, approached a left hand curve and Jurad failed to negotiate it safely.
The motorcycle traveled off the right roadway edge and continued for approximately 30-40 feet down a steep embankment.
Mr. Jurad sustained fatal injuries at the scene while his wife was airlifted by Care Flight to Reno.
It appears that another couple was riding ahead of the Jurad’s on their motorcycle and stopped at the summit when they lost sight of them, according to NHP.
After waiting for several minutes and not seeing or hearing their friend’s motorcycle, they backtracked down the highway and located the accident scene.
The accident is under investigation.
