Carson City hotel, motel tax discount ends after district attorney opinion
For over a decade, Carson City hotels and motels were able to claim a two percent discount for paying their taxes early each month. However, after an opinion issued by the District Attorney’s Office stating that the discount was never approved by the Board of Supervisors, the discount will no longer be applicable.
According to a letter sent to hotels and motels within Carson City limits in July, the two percent discount businesses had been receiving since 2005 for paying their occupancy transient taxes by the 15th of each month was to be rescinded after it was determined it had never been formally approved by the Board of Supervisors. In the last four years, the discount had a savings of between $25,000 to $39,000 each year.
At present, Carson City has (available for visitors) eight hotels, five motels, three RV parks, and 1 (one) house-for-rent, according to the Carson City Tourism's lodging page. (This does not include AirBnBs.)
According to Carson City Culture and Tourism Authority Executive Director David Peterson, after sending the letter out in early July, he hadn’t heard much feedback from the business owners in town.
There is no plan at this time to reinstate the discount, said Peterson.
