Outdoors with Don Q: My daily favorite websites and one seasonal favorite
I admit to spending a considerable amount of time each day on the Internet, while browsing at a number of my favorite websites. The browsing is very informative and believe it or not, I do learn something new every day by visiting those websites.
Carsonnow.org: As you would guess, my No. 01 favorite website is Carson Now, where I have served as their Outdoor Editor for more than five years.
Each week at Carson Now, I provide an updated fishing report with photos and also an outdoor article, also with photos.
In producing the weekly fishing reports, a considerable amount of time is spent obtaining information for waters that stretch from the Bishop area of California to the State of Oregon and all over Nevada, when available.
That information is derived from a combination of different websites, E-mails, phone calls and personal contacts.
The weekly outdoor articles cover a wide range of annual activities such as:
Winter: Making reservations for summer travel.
Spring: Fishing for Lahontan Cutthroat Trout at Pyramid Lake.
Summer: On-going drought causing serious problems.
Fall: Visiting Apple Hill, California.
Other favorite websites:
Carsonvalleytimes.com: It is a locally owned and locally operated Internet news magazine covering Gardnerville, Minden and the surrounding area.
You can reach Editor Joey Crandall by phone: (775) 781-6900 or by E-Mail at editor@carsonvalleytimes.com.
modernsportsman.proboards.com: I have been a member of this sportsmen's website for many years and enjoy visiting with many other hunters and fishermen from all over the world. Most of the visiting is done at the "Campfire Forum."
smg.photobucket.com: A website where you can store all kind of personal photos in all kinds of different folders. This is the website where I keep the photos that are posted at the Modern Sportsman website.
fairbanksalaska.com/goldenheart: This is a camera in downtown Fairbanks, Alaska, where you can watch vehicles, pedestrians, the Cheena River, chimney smoke, clouds, etc. In the winter, it reminds me why I live in Carson City and not in Fairbanks. Brrr!
video.dot.ca.gov: The official website for Caltrans live weather cameras. In the winter, you can check on roadway conditions at mountain locations such as Donner Summit, Truckee, North Lake Tahoe, South Lake Tahoe, Echo Summit.
Seasonal favorite: At this time of the year, it is fun to spend time at explore.org/live-cams/player/brown-bear-salmon-cam-brooks-falls. This is the website where you can watch brown bears catching and eating salmon at Brooks River Falls in Katmai National Park, Alaska.
It is fascinating to see large bears standing in the water at the top of the falls, waiting for salmon to leap into the air, so they can catch and eat the fish.
There is a definite pecking order as larger bears stand at the top of the falls, and smaller ones are in the ice-cold water just below the falls.
There is also a pecking order for the top of the falls, with some bears relegated to staying on the sides of the river rather than in the middle.
Those bears are currently gorging themselves on the protein-rich salmon, as they add on weight to get them though the winter hibernations.
It is amazing how many salmon they eat, one right after another. For darn sure, "you know who" doesn't want to come back next time as a salmon, especially one that has to leap over the Brooks River Falls. There would be too many hungry jaws waiting to snatch me out of the air.
Finally:
You, too, probably have favorite websites that you visit on a daily basis. They are interesting and informative.
Most importantly, at the various news websites, you can read about events as soon as they occur rather than having to wait to read about them the following morning in a printed newspaper.
Bet Your Favorite Pigeon
Bet your favorite pigeon that he can't tell you if one of my favorite websites is where to obtain fishing information for the Virginia Lakes area, located west of Conway Summit on U.S. 395.
If he grins and says, "Yes, and that Virginia Lakes information is provided by the Virginia Lakes Resort at Little Virginia Lake, California," he has also been to that same website of www.virginialakesresort.com.
