Thunderstorms again develop over Sierra, Red Flag Warning goes up for Tuesday
As it has been over the past few days, showers and thunderstorms have developed Monday afternoon over the Sierra, with an increased chance of storms expected to impact much of the region though the evening, according to the National Weather Service. The stronger of the storms will be capable of producing heavy rain, hail, and winds in excess of 40 mph.
Outflow winds pose a danger to boaters and may kick up areas of blowing dust across western Nevada. Locations impacted include: Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley, Virginia City, Incline Village, South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe City, Kings Beach, Alpine Meadows, Squaw Valley, and in Mono County around Crowley Lake, Mammoth Lakes, Sonora Pass, June Lake, Lee Vining, Twin Lakes and Toms Place.
The weather service advises that during a thunderstorm, people should seek shelter inside a sturdy structure and stay away from windows. Hikers and campers should seek shelter in a vehicle if possible. If on or near a lake, get out of the water and move indoors or inside a vehicle. Don't be caught on the water in a thunderstorm. Strong wind gusts and lightning pose an immediate danger to boaters.
Drift smoke from the Hog Fire near Susanville remains in the region. The National Weather Service advises people to stay indoors as much as possible when smoke is present and to consider rescheduling outdoor activities. For the latest air quality readings, see quality http://airnow.gov
Meanwhile, gusty winds and more threats of thunderstorms has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag Warning from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. A Fire Weather Watch is in effect from late Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening.
The weather service says thunderstorms will be Isolated to scattered Tuesday and Wednesday. Storms will be a hybrid mix of wet and dry. However, with recent unusually low humidity, vegetation could be extra receptive to new lightning caused fire starts.
Gusty outflow winds up to 40-50 mph on Tuesday, with gusts up to 60 mph on Wednesday.
Lightning can create new fire starts and may combine with strong outflow winds to cause a fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them, the weather service advises.
