Douglas County announces death of Judge Cassandra Jones
MINDEN — Chairman Mark Gardner of the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners released the following statement on the passing of East Fork Justice Court Justice of the Peace, Judge Cassandra Jones:
“Douglas County is heartbroken over the passing of East Fork Justice Court Justice of the Peace, Judge Cassandra Jones. Judge Jones was elected in 2018 and took office in 2019 and holds the distinction of serving as the first female judge in Douglas County.
She dedicated her life to public service and the residents of her community and received many awards over the course of her career in recognition of her efforts. She was an advocate for the most vulnerable members of our population and served in a variety of capacities over the course of her career including as a law clerk for Douglas County District Court Judge, Judge Gibbons, now Chief Judge of the Supreme Court of Appeals, for 10 years and an elected member of the Gardnerville Town Board from 2014-2018.
She also served as a member of the board for Austin’s House since 2014, and the Community Foundation of Douglas County since 2018.
We send our sincere condolences and prayers to her family and the East Fork Justice Court team members during this very difficult time. The County Manager has ordered the flags at Douglas County Public facilities to be lowered to half-mast through Friday, July 15, 2022 in recognition of Judge Jones’ years of dedicated service.”
According to The Record-Courier, Judge Jones died of cancer.

Judge Jones graduated from Arizona State University’s College of Law, in the top 10% of her class. She began her career as a litigation attorney for the law firm of Brooke & Shaw, where she engaged in criminal, family, and civil litigation. She then served as the Staff Attorney for the local District Court, helping with criminal matters at the felony level and helping to establish the Special Advocates for the Elderly program.
In 2011, Cassandra established the law firm of Heritage Law Group. During her years as a private practice attorney, Judge Jones continued to work in civil litigation including advocating for children in domestic violence cases, termination of parental rights, and complex business and trust litigation. Additionally, she worked in elder law, guardianships, and probates. She has also served as an arbitrator, mediator, and justice of the peace pro tem.
Judge Jones’ years of service to justice in Douglas County have been recognized by many. She has received the following awards for her service:
— Spotlight Award for Best Professional Service Provider in Douglas County, given by the Business Council for Douglas County (2017)
— Best of Carson Valley, Record Courier (Runner Up 2016, 2017, and 2018)
— Pro Bono Service Award (2011 – 2018)
— Certificate of Special Appreciation, awarded by the Special Advocates for the Elderly and the local District Court (2014)
Judge Jones has gone far beyond her law practice to serve Douglas County. She has served our community by:
